So-called Islamic State (IS) has blown up the Great Mosque of al-Nuri in Mosul, Iraqi forces say.
The historic landmark was where IS leader Abubakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed a "caliphate" in 2014.
However, IS claims that US aircraft destroyed the mosque, in a statement issued by its news outlet Amaq.
Earlier on Wednesday, the commander of Iraqi forces told the BBC they were 15m from the mosque, as they pushed ahead with their offensive to retake Mosul.
So much history...
So much history destroyed by these Barbaric fucks...
Nothing praises Allah more than destroying mosques of your very own religion

They probably don't care anymore. They just like blowing stuff up.

It was done because the Iraqi army was closing in on it. ISIS would rather blow it up rather than let the Iraqi army re-capture it seeing as it held major Symbolic Value to ISIS as it was the place where al-Baghdadi declared the Caliphate.
An 845 year old building.
I hope the fuckers responsible for this end up on the receiving end of some harsh retribution, for this and for the countless other atrocities that they've committed. Fucking hypocrites.

So it's ISIS' version of the Nero Decree at work.
Assholes, look how beautiful it was. What's next?

To make a bit of light in this event, does this mean that Michael Bay is secretly funding ISIS?
I'm still upset about the Taliban blowing up this statue.
Fuck all these guys

They found a cave behind with a shitload more of buddha
its like a fuck you to the Taliban
Its baffling that a structure can stand for 845 years and in an instant its gone without warning.
Think of all of the bullshit it endured just to be blown up by some savages that don't appreciate their own culture or history.

Yeah, this pisses me off too. Mohammed Omar had this to say:
"I did not want to destroy the Bamiyan Buddha. In fact, some foreigners came to me and said they would like to conduct the repair work of the Bamiyan Buddha that had been slightly damaged due to rains. This shocked me. I thought, these callous people have no regard for thousands of living human beings -- the Afghans who are dying of hunger, but they are so concerned about non-living objects like the Buddha. This was extremely deplorable. That is why I ordered its destruction. Had they come for humanitarian work, I would have never ordered the Buddha's destruction."
Regardless, idolatry was still used to whip up support from provincial leaders. It's still horse-shit. While I can agree with what he was saying, and see wisdom in his words, he had no need to order to destruction of the statues simply to prove a point.
Either way, I bring it up just to show how much of a far cry the Islamic State is from the Taliban, as there's a reason they don't even want to be associated with them anymore.

A far more wise leader would have bargained for humanitarian aid as part of allowing repairs on a statue. You can repair the statue, tourism money goes to helping feed our people, and you employ local workers to help repair it. The man's wisdom was short sighted and bound heavily to appeals to emotion.

Yeah, basically that. Prime example of a knee-jerk reaction, only in this case the individual in question was powerful and blew stuff up.

Humanitarian aid would have been needed after the repairs would have been made, so it would have only been a short term success. And Afghanistan would have needed a tourist industry to start with in order for it to make some money.

Yeah, and blowing up the statue provided absolutely no success so clearly even if the solution was temporary, it would have been better than shooting one's self in the foot no? Repairing the statue would have been one step closer to being able to have a booming tourism industry at the least. It could have employed local workers during and maybe even after the repair. Even if their tourism industry revolved around literally just that one statue and made almost no actual money, it still would have been a bigger success than blowing the statue up. Plus letting people repair a huge culturally significant icon like that statue seems kinda like a good bargaining chip for when you go to the UN and say, "hey bros, maybe we can have some aid since like, we're being totally cool and not being a bunch of violent bellends?"
seeing as it held major Symbolic Value to ISIS as it was the place where al-Baghdadi declared the Caliphate.
Just my pure 0.02$, but it might mean that al-Baghdadi actually died. And they want to preserve memory of him this way.

Which, ironically, they'd probably have if it hadn't been for the Taliban.
No fucking way. This is literally Barry's idiot plan from Four Lions.
