More than 100 people have been treated in hospital after a suspected chemical leak along the East Sussex coast. Birling Gap beach was evacuated on Sunday after people reported breathing difficulties, stinging eyes and vomiting when a "mist" appeared. Eastbourne District General Hospital says it has treated 133 people. Investigations are under way into the cause of the "chemical haze", which was currently unknown, Sussex Police said. A spokesman said the first report came in just before 17:00 BST where "up to 50 people had been affected by irritation to eyes and throats". Six people initially went to hospital with minor symptoms, but as of Sunday night 133 patients were being "decontaminated" at hospital, East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust said. This made me think like it was something like the movie 'the mist' still awfull nonethless. Hope everyone will recover that has been affeceted by this
Possible chlorine leak according to other sources. just wow.
From the description I would guess at hydrogen chloride gas, would look like a white mist and would turn into acid when in contact with water (or exposed membranes)
But where the fuck did it come from? I was watching this on the news and I only caught the end of it.
This is where i live, ive been at reading all sunday for the festival and as soon as i got connection all i saw on facebook was posts about peoples eyes and throats. When we were drivijt back bexhill/hastings way the haze was still there and i could literally taste pure chlorine and my throat was killing me. This is some fucked up shit

Was up on a hill myself so would of been ok

Any UK posters nearby the event able to confirm/deny that it was a chlorine leak?
From the description I would guess at hydrogen chloride gas, would look like a white mist and would turn into acid when in contact with water (or exposed membranes)
Seems you're right, to someone who hasn't experience with chemicals HCL and Chlorine would smell the same without the two next to each other. Chlorine would've produced a much different looking cloud, seems like a spill of HCL due to the white cloud. Which is worse, since chlorine hydrolyzes to HCL in the body anyway and can be fatal in the quantities these people were breathing since it was causing discharge and vomiting. Glad nobody was seriously injured.
