WHY? - Moh Lhean - 2017
Folk/Rap/Alt Rock
Favourite Song/s: This Ole King, One Mississippi, The Barely Blur
Stumbled on this album in one of /mu/'s sharethreads shortly after it released and I still haven't stopped listening to it. Filled with infectious folk beats and the somewhat droning voice of WHY?'s Yoni Wolf, which I was immediately endeared to. If I were to give any criticisms, I'd say that the album begins to lag near the second half, and it may not be everyone's preferred style of Rap.

Illinois(e) - Sufjan Stevens - 2005
Genre: Indie folk/rock
Favourite songs: "Come On! Feel the Illinoise!", "Chicago", "Casimir Pulaski Day", "The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us", "Riffs and Variations on a Single Note for Jelly Roll, Earl Hines, Louis Armstrong, Baby Dodds, and the King of Swing, to Name a Few"
Pretty late to the party on hearing any of Stevens' work, but he has quickly become one of my favourite modern folk and indie rock artists. His ability to orchestrate such a wide production pallet makes every one of his albums, all having their own sub-genre and topic/location of focus, feel authentic and rich with its lush instrumentation and variety of mastered genres.
Illinois(e) specifically is by far his best work and the latest I have tuned in to. Its ability to tell so many intricate personal stories in the form of a state's history and geography truly reflects Stevens' lyrical mastery. The instrumentation on this as well can vary from thick brass and wind orchestras to a simple guitar, leading to a diverse yet encapsulating sound in respect to the mood Stevens sets with each overview.
Even the verbose titles and vivid comic-styled artwork convey a very unique and eccentric style that only adds to the humour and depth of the album as a whole. It gives context to seemingly innocent artistic instrumental and vocal breaks, making a very thin but robust thread hold the entire double LP together. Not one part of the album dips in the very clear line of quality Stevens has set as a bar for all of his work.

last album as is last new album or just last album? I find that a little confusing

Energetic, intense, dense music with lots of sound and layers and yet still delivers the right emotional punch with it's appropriate ups, downs, buldups. It's like a darker Dan Deacon and a more expansive Oneohtrix Point Never, with some Arca.

Animal Collective - Strawberry Jam (2007)
genre: neo-psychedelia, psychedelic/noise pop
fav songs: fireworks, for reverend green, cuckoo cuckoo
was originally going to give it a 7/10, decided to listen to it one more time and here we are. quite a grower. basically every song has a lot of weird shit going on, and at first it sounds annoying but after a while you're like "hey this is actually pretty good." beyond the chaotic instrumentals that populate most of the album (special mention to cuckoo cuckoo), the real selling point for me is the vocals. there's a lot of weird chants and catchy choruses, but the best moments come when they let loose and break out into screaming. so yeah it was pretty good, the best moments are incredible, though there's also some tracks that just aren't very memorable or interesting

More Life
Drake
Rel: 18/03/2017 (Last night)
Genre: Hip-Hop/Mixed
I'm a Drizzy fan boy so expect a biased reaction
It's only been 24 hours, I can safely say it isn't as complete as views, a bit mis-matched and all over the place, but, Drake has been saying that the album is a "playlist" so I guess he can be excused for the lack of refined focus, it is supposed to play out "Like a radio show" and it kind of does, especially with the random samples throughout in the outros/intros of the songs. The first half of the album is a lot more "commercial" I guess, with more radio songs, the later half enters a bit more of an experimental zone (although the whole album is worthy of being "experimental")
I can't really rate the album until I've sat with it more, just like Views it took a few days to realise what were my favourites and my general feel for the album
But first impression it's great, it has a real vibe about it. It still sounds like a Drake album even with the experimental songs. He has tried to spread across more styles/waves which I think preserves his longevity.
Songs of note for me so far: Free Smoke, KMT, Do Not Disturb, Passionfruit, Madiba Riddim

Genre: Progressive Death Metal
Fav Song: Living Wave
This shit came out like last week and I've been listened to it a ton. I haven't been able to digest it all just yet, as it always takes me forever to really understand all of their albums, but this one so far is quite amazing and maybe is better than Spiritual Migration (their previous album)

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Damage and Joy
Genre: Alt Rock/Indie
Fav Track: War on Peace
the mary chain with their first album in almost 20 years. it has all the elements of a mary chain album and improves on their old work. there is still loud droning guitar on some tracks and others are mellow acoustic ballads and it feels like a mix of stoned and dethroned and automatic. wonderfully sharp guitar tones and solid drumming put this up as my 3rd fav mary chain album. was super excited for this album and i am not disappointed in what we were given.

Eminem - Curtain Call: The Hits - 2005
Genre: Hip-Hop
Favorite Songs - Like Toy Soldiers, Mockingbird, Cleanin' Out My Closet, When I'm Gone
The songs listed above are some of my favorite songs of all time, just because they sound so genuine, and instead of being about banging bitches and banging bullets into snitches etc, They're focused more on family and the people he's lost and the mistakes hes made (as well as being mad at his mom). That combined with Eminem's style of rhymes makes the songs even smoother and better sounding.
8.5/10 (Only because I think a lot of the other songs on the album are meh, if it were an album full of songs like the 4 above it would be an easy 10/10)

Amy Macdonald - Under Stars
Genre: Rock / Ballad / Jazz (A little bit of everything, really)
Favorite song: Under Stars / Down By The Water
Released just 2 months ago. Been a fan ever since "This Is The Life", and obviously she's still got it. I ordered both the Deluxe Box edition and the LP. The best part was that due to a mixup at the distributor, I didn't get my limited edition signed box-set, so I contacted her on Twitter and she sent me a personal copy with a personal signature <3.
She's definitely developed a very refined style over the years that I personally feel is very unique - which is well accompanied by her unique voice, which is both deep and has that lovely Scottish tint to it. I love every track on this album - except maybe "Dream On". It's alright, but they processed Amy's vocals very oddly and especially so in the chorus. If you listen to it you'll hear what I mean. The acoustic version of the song is fine, and I prefer it. So it's definetely some kind of processing.
That said, I won't deduct a point for it. The deluce album is filled with 19 songs and me feeling a bit iffy about a short segment on one track isn't an issue.

Favorite Songs: The Happiest Days of Our Lives/Another Brick in the Wall (Part 1), Comfortably Numb, In The Flesh?
Listened to the whole album all the way through recently.
The last minute of "In the Flesh?" gives me chills every time I hear the aircraft going down.
A cynical album that a cynical person can enjoy.
What else can I say? It's a classic.

Boredoms - Soul Discharge (1989 version)
Noise/freakout rock
Bubblepop Shot, "Sun, Gun, Run," G.I.L. '77, Castromix '99.
This is the best of the early Boredoms catalogue. Pop Tatari, Chocolate Synthesizer, and Wow 2 have too many distractions from the primal, angry, and sometimes funny screaming. I have yet to find a noise rock album as visceral as this. Anyone into noise, anyone remotely interested in what raw vocals are capable of in rock, NEEDS to check this out. Amon Duul II's band members would probably love this album. 9/10.

At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command (2000)
Genre: Post-hardcore
Highlights: Arcarsenal, Pattern Against User, Invalid Letter Dept., Cosmonaut
At the Drive-In had been in my backlog for a while after I picked up this album from my brother last summer. After hearing that they were coming out with their first album in 17 years, however, I decided to finally dust it off and give it a listen. I already really liked post-hardcore bands such as Unwound, Fugazi, and Drive Like Jehu—the latter of which I often saw get compared to AtDI— so I was expecting to like this. What I didn't expect was just how much I would.
The first track, Arcarsenal, is probably the best introduction to this band anyone could ever get. The instrumentation builds up an immense amount of momentum for when Cedric's vocals come in, and when they do, that momentum hits you like an out-of-control freight train and never really lets up for the rest of the album's duration. It goes through some ups and downs, and some twists and turns, but it never really slows down. You think that whole train is just going to come clean off the tracks at any moment, and yet it continues on its merry way, completely disregarding every one of your worries. It knows you secretly love the adrenaline rush you're getting from all of this, and that's exactly what drives it to keep going. Only when it reaches the end of the line does it finally stop.
Once the rush is starting to wear off, you suddenly feel some urge to do it again, and once you do, you find that repeated listens just reward you even more. In my case, I'm finding this album to be really quotable, and as such, I can't help but hum the more memorable lines [sp](e.g. "I MUST HAVE READ A THOUSAND FAAAAAACES," "CUT AWAY, CUT AWAY," "DANCING ON THE CORPSES' ASHES," "I'M JUST TIRED OF COUNTING BODIES," etc.)[/sp] at least once every day. I want to listen to it again and again to memorize them all.
9/10, and I can foresee myself bumping that up to a 10 in the very near future.
The last Album I heard "Autograph". One of my most favorite music Album I have ever heard. I would like to give it 8/10.
So i watched Metallica Some Kind of Monster documentary and then followed it by a full listen of their St. Anger album and wow. I fucking love it. I liked the album before, thought it was ok, but now im addicted to all of the songs, its a perfect album. I know audio quality wise it sounds like garbage, thats intentional and after seeing the film, it puts into the mindset of the band and really connects. I highly recommend anyone who is interested, watch the film then listen to the album. 9.9/10.

I've listened to St. Anger back-to-back before, and I honestly thought it was so terrible it actually came back around to being funny. It's almost fascinatingly terrible, even. Here you have some of the guys who made Ride the Lightning replace Lars' drum kit with a couple of trash cans and get together to record an album in a sewer, displaying James' complete loss of tonality and ability to write lyrics, Lars' off-beat kick drum, and the bassist being even more muffled than the average Metallica record to the point where he pretty much isn't there.
That might sound harsh, but when James passes off lyrics like "my lifestyle determines my deathstyle", "I'm madly in anger with you", and "we the people: are we the people?" as lyrically deep, I can't help but laugh in response. With that said, it might be the most unintentionally funny album I know of.

Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste Of Rain... Why Kneel? (1999)
Hip-hop
Deep Puddle Theme Song, The Candle, Where The Wild Things Are, "June 26, 1998," "June 26, 1999," I Am Hip-Hop. To be honest I like all of the songs.
This is all any musician will ever need to write on existential depression. The magnum opus of that area of hip-hop, and probably music as a whole for this subject matter. Four rappers come together to voice their thoughts on life. (I Am Hip-Hop is against the grain, but still a damn fine song). This could ONLY be done in hip-hop with how many ideas and motifs are put forth. Magnificient, 10/10.

Wipers - Youth of America (1981)
Punk Rock
3.5/5
Not your typical punk rock, it branches out in a couple directions to add something new to the dying genre. Really enjoyed the noisey lo-fi guitar and the singer's vocals which sometimes got kind of chaotic. The title track kinda reminded me of the Stooges and Suicide.

Fuzz Rock
4/5
Found this lying under a box at work. Garage rock with a hazed out guitar, good hooks and lots of time to really soak in the fuzz vibe. Each song is catchy on its own which is great.

Had this album for years but never listened to it all the way through. Really strong cohesion and fucking mind blowing bass riffs and shit. still doesn't hold a candle to lonerism but still a decent album.
