The heavy metal band Slayer have confirmed that they will split this summer, after a global farewell tour.
The band summarised their remarkable career – 37 years, 12 studio albums, almost 3,000 performances and two Grammy awards – in a lengthy Instagram post, concluding: “The age of Slayer, one of the greatest thrash/metal/punk bands of this or any age, is coming to an end.”

After making some of the most brutal, breathtakingly aggressive, all-hell’s-a-breaking-loose music ever created, being one of the four bands that defined an entire musical genre and being the band that other heavy acts are measured against and aspire to…after nearly 37 years, releasing 12 studio albums, multiple live recordings, compilations, live video and two box sets, playing nearly 3000 concerts in all corners of the world, receiving countless awards including five Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards, Gold records and other accolades…having its own exhibit in the Smithsonian Institute, gracing hundreds of magazine covers, experiencing the devastating loss of a founding brother, and even appearing on “The Tonight Show,” the age of Slayer, one of the greatest thrash/ metal/punk bands of this or any age, is coming to an end. Slayer will do one last concert tour around the globe to thank their fans for all the support over the years.
I was honestly kinda shocked when I heard about this. Part of me wants to go see them one more time but then I realize I could probably go do 3 other gigs for the cost of a Slayer ticket.

Check Groupon, pretty damn cheap tickets there.
Better late than never I suppose. As sad as it is that the era of Slayer is ending, World Painted Blood should've been their last album and the death of Hanneman should've been the final chapter of the band.

I feel like a unicorn because I really like Repentless.
Then again, I'm also one of those heathens who prefers new Slayer over old, so...
It's long overdue. Slayer has been in creative limbo for some time, and most of their albums are oozing with filler. World Painted Blood was alright, but I can't say the band ever recovered from the nu-metal aping teen edge period of the 2000s.
As someone who has never seen Slayer live, and has seeing Slayer live on their bucket list, this will eat my next paycheck.

Same here and it sucks big time that I never got to see the classic line-up with Hanneman.
I think this is well-deserved. The band has been going for nigh 40 years - Tom Araya is 56 years old now. He's older than my dad.
I think they've earned this leave, and I wish them and their families the very best.

Some of their 2000s live performances were really good

Slayer to me really shone the best when performing live, just a shame I'll never get to see them live as they were in their "prime", like Metallica
A lot better than trying to limp forward by force while having the whole thing dissolve on itself
Cough, cough, Metallica, cough.
I saw Slayer in 2008 at Mayhem fest before it got packed with shitty bands. I went to see Behemoth but they put on a great show.
I'm not into Slayer but I appreciate the fuck out of them.

Seen them twice luckily, once pre Hannemen, the other post Hanneman. Both were spectacular. In fact, the post Hanneman-era show was the heaviest I've ever seen, since they paired with Gojira. It was one fucking hell of a good night! Made it to the very front of the crowd too!
The closest show on this tour is at the Mohegan Sun in CT. Kinda too far for just a show, even if it is Slayer (I live over 2hrs away). Maybe my mind will change in the coming months, but for now I'll just live satisfied with the 2 shows I have seen.
Besides, all the current tickets are sold out, so either I'll pay out the ass, or I pay out the ass.

Saw them at the 09' Mayhem fest in Mansfield, MA. Most of the small stage bands didn't fully win me over, but the main stage acts were awesome.
