• Bill Nye Claims Disney Withheld $28 Million in ‘Science Guy’ Profits
According to a lawsuit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Nye has spent much of the last decade trying to audit Disney’s profit statements for “Bill Nye the Science Guy.” The result is shocking: Nye alleges that Disney has withheld $28 million in profits from distribution of the show. According to the suit, Nye became suspicious in 2008, when Disney informed him that he owed the company nearly $500,000 due to an “accounting error.”

According to the suit, Disney reported gross revenues of $26 million, but also reported costs of $20 million — for a show largely underwritten by federal grants. Nye engaged an attorney and began what would become a drawn-out and largely fruitless effort to audit Disney’s statements, according to the lawsuit. At one point, the company said it was experiencing a backlog of audits and would not be able to begin the process for three or four years. Once the audit commenced, the company withheld documents, or said it would produce documents and then failed to follow through, the lawsuit alleges. The auditor was not given access to the Netflix and iTunes licensing agreements, among many other records, Nye alleges. The auditor ultimately concluded that Nye is owed $9.3 million. According to the suit, Disney had taken a number of steps to skew the profits calculation in its favor, including applying the wrong rates for distribution fees, improperly deducting foreign taxes, and mischaracterizing revenues.
Source. I had a feeling there was bad blood developing between Disney and Bill Nye, especially since both attractions he was featured in have closed in the past few months. I hope this doesn't lead to Disney trying to bury the original Bill Nye the Science Guy show from distribution platforms.
I never thought of that about Universe of Energy. That ride was aging poorly, but Bill does feature super prominently, may have had something to do with it.
Damn, that's a helluva lot of money to steal from a show done for the benefit of kids with the financial support of the government. Well done in being so blindingly greedy, Disney.
the guy just wants to help the fucking world man

They pretty continuously make fantastic stuff, but Disney as a corporation are rotten to the core.
the guy just wants to help the fucking world man
Bill Nye has pretty much lost his goddamned mind
especially since both attractions he was featured in have closed in the past few months.
what attraction he was in that closed besides universe of energy? I know you can hear him in the queue for dinosaur but that's still open.

As for Dinosaur, the last I heard they disabled his audio a while ago after they did the recent major refurbishment, but I wouldn't be surprised if they brought it back due to backlash. However, Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom is rumored to be on the chopping block though for Indiana Jones Adventure though, and I wouldn't be surprised if this lawsuit pushes the plan forward.

Bill Nye The Broke-ass Guy
"And today I'm going to prove this mouse right here owes me millions of dollars, WITH SCIENCE!"
Weird, they just finished fixing the ride not too long ago.
To be fair, it wouldn't be the first time Disney has done this, with the recent example being the Great Movie Ride. I wouldn't be surprised if this lawsuit fast tracks the ride being removed though, even if the audio is no longer there.
Well good luck sueing Disney lmao
Tell me more? Don't know much about this
I hope it's not because people are being moody ignorant cunts about his gender and sex episode, if it's not that then I don't know either.
I hope it's not because people are being moody ignorant cunts about his gender and sex episode, if it's not that then I don't know either.
it get's worse than that, when old bill tried to argue science, he shows us why, new bill just says "YOU'RE WRONG!" He looks like he feels like he isn't having fun anymore.
it get's worse than that, when old tried to argue science, he shows us why, new bill just says "YOU'RE WRONG!"
Are you sure you just don't like what he's saying? His new show didn't delve into science in that much depth, it was more overtly fun than what I hear his old one was like (I'm 19 so I never saw it), but he never said anything controversial or scientifically inaccurate. In fact he wasn't hard enough on a panel guy who was against renewable energy, there's a false notion of balance there, like you have to treat all views equally regardless of which one the facts render objectively wrong. In short, you can accuse the show of brushing past things, or not going into too much depth, or taking a stance, but it's hardly shouting "YOU'RE WRONG!" at a camera for roughly 30 minutes.
Tell me more? Don't know much about this
People are upset that his show for children is geared for children. Yes, I too believe that some things are a bit too watered down and simplified, or that the presentation can be a bit "bombastic" But no one would watch if it was just a grainy reading for the latest science papers
it get's worse than that, when old bill tried to argue science, he shows us why, new bill just says "YOU'RE WRONG!" He looks like he feels like he isn't having fun anymore.
After 20 years of straight up science denial and reiterating the same debate 500 times, I don't blame him.
it get's worse than that, when old bill tried to argue science, he shows us why, new bill just says "YOU'RE WRONG!" He looks like he feels like he isn't having fun anymore.
Does it really surprise you? People nowadays are less willing to see reason than they ever have before.
Does it really surprise you? People nowadays are less willing to see reason than they ever have before.
Old Bill would challenge that, not join in with it. That's the point Omni's making, I believe.
Wasn't the appeal original show that you didn't need bombast because science itself is pretty cool.
I personally disagree with the new style and find it kind of annoying, but people are saying that its a perfect valid reason to trash all that bill nye has done. and that is what I find ridiculous. Like the show or not, the man has (and still is doing) wonders in reaching out to younger kids with science, as well as with helping the public understand the threats of climate change, evolution (who remembers that amazing debate?), etc. So perhaps I should have clarified, but I feel that a lot of the "outrage" surrounding him is quite manufactured
Disney as a corporation are rotten to the core.
Pun intended??
huh, I had no idea he was involved with cyberspace mountain, never rode it. also I can confirm his audio in dinosaur was there last week as I rode it and heard him in the queue.
Wasn't the appeal original show that you didn't need bombast because science itself is pretty cool.
... the original show WAS bombast? I mean people who don't like it usually cite that it's too gimmicky as their criticism.
Bill Nye has pretty much lost his goddamned mind
What do you mean he lost his mind..? What are you on about.
