Actor Peter Sallis has died at the age of 96, his agents have announced.
He was best known for appearing in Last of the Summer Wine and was also famous as the voice of Wallace in Wallace and Gromit.
His agent confirmed he died peacefully with his family by his side.
He already retired from the role in 2011 and another actor has played Wallace in video games and stuff, but it's fairly unlikely there will ever be another full-blown W&G film without him
Here's an interview with him from a few years back, followed by his personal favourite Wallace & Gromit scene

A peaceful death with family after a (hopefully) happy and successful life
now that's a good life
Goodnight, sweet Wensleydale.

[sp]still the best w&g episode[/sp]
I grew up on wallace and gromit, this is some depressing news.
Rest in peace dude...
This is heartbreaking, I grew up with this duo albeit with different voice actors.
Rest in peace.
Well, that's upsetting.
When I was really, really young I did a load of plasticine animations because I'd watched a load of Wallace and Gromit (really, what British kid hasn't?). Sent them into Aardman, and got some very kind things back in the post - W&G things with signatures on, a letter, that kind of stuff - but also a storyboard for Morph they used in job interviews. I really should dig that out sometime.
Anyway, Aardman stuff was a fairly big thing in my childhood, so RIP Peter. I'll have to break the cheese out tonight.
I do need to watch this with the bf
W&G always was this weird thing that I never bothered really getting into ever and just kinda existed as 'one of the classics'
ah fuck i've still got episodes of wallace and gromit on VHS, fucking adored that show
I think we still have a couple of the VHS tapes, now the theme song is stuck in my head.
Being British and not thinking you might have some of the Wallace & Gromit films on tape somewhere is a deportable offence
When i was kid,i often watched this show.
Rest in peace.
Yeah, used to watch this too, although probably dubbed so I've never heard this guys voice.
It was that fucking penguin, wasn't it? He was behind this.
I'm pretty sure not watching Wallace & Gromit and being British is against the law. What a shame, considering most people probably grew up hearing his voice.
Wallace and Gromit was the shit when I was a kid, this makes me sad.
I loved these as a kid. They were all just totally wonderful, and his voice was so perfect for the role. RIP
I'm at least glad he lived to be so old.
RIP :(
Added an interview with Peter Sallis and his favourite Wallace & Gromit clip to the OP. I need to rewatch them all now
I hope there's plenty of Wensleydale in heaven.
Trivia post
- During production of Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Dreamworks literally had no idea what they were doing and tried to get Sallis replaced by an American actor (source)
- Nick Park created Wallace & Gromit as a student film project and approached Peter Sallis, a well-known TV actor, with just £50 to play the part. Sallis accepted but insisted that he audition for it (source)
- A Grand Day Out is worth half a Boyhood, as it took six years to make. When Park went back to Sallis years later and said he had finished the film, Sallis reportedly said "fuck me" (same source as last)
- All 5 Wallace & Gromit films were nominated for Academy Awards, and 3 of them won. A Grand Day Out was beaten by Creature Comforts, which is also made by Nick Park (source)
Wallace and Gromit scared the shit out of me when i was a kid. This sucks :C RIP
Man this sucks. I remember watching my three Wallace and Gromit tapes all the time as a kid.

The robot thingy on the moon from 'A Grand Day Out' scared the shit out of me the most. I don't think the accompanying music helped out at all.
Thank you for all of the laughs and smiles you brought to us all. Rest in Peace, Mr. Sallis.

That's a damn shame, I was hoping for another movie.
Oh, Well.
he actually already retired from the role and was replaced a few years ago. His death might effect whether they make another one but Nick Park has said in the past it's still a possibility.
Also, I don't think it can be understated how fucking cool of him it was to lend his talent to an up and coming animator the way he did. As an animator finding the voice talent you want isn't an easy thing and it couldn't have possibly been such an iconic character and series without him.
Oh man, I remember loving Wallace and Gromit.
Our art-teacher in High School even showed us some episodes praising them to be "Some of the most incredibly detailed work he has ever seen" and used them as an example of 10/10 art project.
I loved these shows so much. I remember that one episode with the psycho robot dog that gave me awful nightmares for a while.

The noises that thing made scared the hell out of me
