At the D23 Expo 2017, Disney announced the Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be closing, replaced by a new ride centered around Mickey and Minnie Mouse. The new attraction will be called Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. “You’ll step into the movie screen and onto Goofy’s train” on this new attraction, which will place you inside a Mickey cartoon short.

The last day of operation for The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be August 13, 2017.
Source. Sad to see the last opening day attraction of Disney MGM Studios/Disney Hollywood Studios to be closing, but the visual effect that they are calling 2.5D sounds interesting. EDIT: Footage from the panel has been posted online:
Dang, I'm not going til September. Well here's hoping this new ride is still cool.
A lot of history was in that old attraction, and plenty of historic props and outfits on the line to it. It's a definite shame it'll be going.
Aw dang, that was one of my favorite rides at MGM. Still bummed out we lost Maelstrom.
Man, DHS is going to be even more of a drag now. Half the park is a dirt pile, the other half has a couple attractions. By 2019, it'll be amazing. But now, it truly is a half day park.

All we know of it currently that Mission Space is getting an overhaul which was done in secret and will be ready by September, they are opening a Space Station themed restaurant, and Guardians of the Galaxy are replacing Energy with a new ride (Plus a new attraction in France at World Showcase if you want something to count something besides Future World). I assume more is going to be announced before the 50th though. EDIT: You can watch when they talked about it here:

But yes, Epcot needs help and it's getting it too. Brazil was supposed to be announced but apparently it's been in limbo for the past 3 weeks. It hasn't been cancelled but its' announcement is delayed. Best part about Epcots overhaul is the removal of the dumb rocks at the entrance. But also, RIP Communicore buildings and Fountain of Nations. I'm still hopeful for a true Imagination overhaul at some point in the future.
I'm going to Disney World a week or so after my college semester ( 28th of July ), so I guess going to see this ride should be top of my lists.

It's not a thrilling attraction, but I've always enjoyed it.

It's still a nice relaxing thing to do after lunch or something though.

They could've followed through on doing the big bang concept instead of Guardians but nope. Still hoping Guardians relates to energy in some way instead of being a generic space rollercoaster.

I heard they're keeping the Facade of TGMR though for the Mickey and Minnie attraction though
Speaking of Mission Space, does anyone know what the calmer version of the ride is like? There's absolutely no way I'd be able to handle the normal version of it because I get motion sick extremely easily and don't do anything super intense, but I'm interested in what the ride itself is like.

I might have to settle for a POV vid on Youtube or something. For real though, I wish my body were more resilient. There are so many rides I have to settle for watching on Youtube that I'll probably never be able to experience. :surrender: I love Disney though. Would live in Florida if I could.

If you can handle green and want to get the full effect, go orange. It really is a unique ride. And like they say, don't look away from the screen. There's only a couple bits (launch, slingshot around the moon, and entry to Mars) where you feel the forces. And those forces last for only 10 seconds absolute max. Both version still rock you around.
I went on that ride around March of last year and man it's pretty dated lol. I wouldn't be surprised if he is glad that its going away.

Both offer the same training mission but differ in intensity. The Orange Team is the more intense training experience, while the Green Team is less intense. The Orange Team experience uses a centrifuge that spins and tilts to simulate the speed and G-forces of a spacecraft launch and re-entry, while the Green Team experience is a motion simulator ride that does not spin. If you are prone to motion sickness or uncertain about which level to choose, you should opt for the Green Team for a less intense but still thoroughly exhilarating experience.
dang, kinda seems like they're moving more and more towards the theme park and away from an entertainment park every day. The hollywood ride does kind of look like a good sort of generic ride thats not doused in disney's mouse branding. it does certainly look like it needed an overhaul though.
Glad I rode a lot of these rides that are going away not too long ago, it's somewhat of a shame because a lot of these are really unique and iconic rides that really keep the park feeling diverse. The Great Movie ride is one ride from my last visit that I remember especially well because of how excellent our on-ride guide was. A shame, but hopefully what they replace it with ends up being even better!
Well... there goes another ride I'll never see since I doubt I'll be able to visit WDW earlier than end of next year.
