Yes, the hobby might attract the socially ostracized and downtrodden, but that doesn’t make the group as a whole any less great. Quite the contrary: It makes the group better. “We live in a time of perpetual outrage and offense, and this is what sells newspapers and website articles. #GamersAreGood shows us the overly negative perception of gamers is skewed and very wrong,” Kern said. As with any other hobby, a few bad examples don’t speak for the whole. As @redlianak tweeted, “For some reason, some people find it easy to lump all gamers together and treat us like we’re all the same. All bad. I know that’s not true. The problem is, gamers are shy. So the few bad people are treated as if they’re speaking for the millions of good people.” So if you harbor any ill will toward gamers, why not give us another chance? I’m sure you’ll quickly see how good we are.
The Original tweet: [img_thumb]https://preview.ibb.co/nHaSwS/20180215_125633.png[/img_thumb] Source2 And the insuing drama: And of course, an entire ResetEra thread dedicated to this: Source3 [img_thumb]https://preview.ibb.co/eOzqi7/20180215_130942.png[/img_thumb]
Blows my mind that hashtag drama is newsworthy at this point. But it extra blows my mind that entire social movements are named after the hashtags that started them. BLM, #MeToo, the list goes on. It's a weird new world we live in.
It's a weird new world we live in.
I wanna go back.

It's kinda surreal that this is a legitimate argument that people are having, y'know? It's a little embarrassing, and in two ways: 1. It feels trivial and ridiculous to say 'gamers are victims' 2. A lot of people being unrightly victimized allows me to say 'gamers are victims'
I can't help but chuckle and think about the glass ceiling line from Batman Beyond. But in short, grouping anyone together and saying "Everyone in that group is a dick" holds little difference to any sexist or racist comment made by sexist or racist individuals.
#GamersAreTooBroadAGroupToGeneralize
truly the most oppressed minorities of them all: gamers
truly the most oppressed minorities of them all: gamers
We got a Gamer Holocaust denier here folks.
truly the most oppressed minorities of them all: gamers
Do you know how many gamers die in the Console Wars every year?
Turns out gamer are people, just like other people. And like any group of people, there are nice people and assholes, charitable and greedy, racists and open-minded. And, like any group of people, the media spotlights only the worse of the worse.
Gamer is kind of a shitty term because of how broad it is now There's gaming culture and a lot of subcultures, and subcultures of those. Some are quite toxic and if people aren't precise with their wording, they'll say stupid shit and cause backlashes like this.
Are they though? Ever since most games started dropping the emphasis for community hosted servers in favor of matchmaking I've only noticed the quality of voice chat degrade to the lowest levels of shit. Every game I play now I have to turn off voice chat or else it's just a constant spam of racial epithets, stereotypes, and sexual harassment. Getting into a Pubg match with voice chat on is like asking to have "NIGGER" seared into your brain or other racist shit like people mimicking Chinese people and going "CHINA NUMBA ONE FOR SMALL PENIS". Certainly it's been that way for decades and even Source games were known for this, but there used to be moderated servers to avoid having to deal with it and communities built around the concept of decency. Hell, I used to run a popular Counter-Strike community and we were lenient with our rules to allow non-excessive racism for banter, but today it's just caked on to the point that I don't want to start a conversation outside of Discord with people I'm already familiar with. Even a niche game like Tower Unite can have some backwards mic spam, I remember playing slots back in October and a guy sat in the casino spamming "LYNCH THE NIGGERS" for hours before getting bored and leaving. I'm not one to question free speech, but god damn some people need to relent on this, it isn't even funny for its shock value anymore and it's way too prevalent.

If some people just believe it's their God given right to use a meatspin spray then so be it.

It's exacerbated here cuz of the anonimity intrinsic to online gaming, but that doesn't really mean anything. People are just dicks sometimes, and you just mute them and that's it. Taking to online platforms to try and lynch these people yourself, painting innocent targets in the process actually giving the dicks reason to continue griefing and being dicks is only going to make things worse.

Kind of a sad state of affairs that deserves scrutiny, at least in my opinion and the hashtag is a bad idea because of it.
I wanna go back.
I got rid of my Facebook and have never gotten into Twitter. I try to use my phone as little as possible. I work in a restaurant, an expensive one, and it just boggles my mind older people are glued to their phone talking about what they see on FB or Twitter. It encourages me to use my phone less because I don’t want to end up like that.
Making identity politics out of playing video games is pretty cringy.
identity politics is pretty cringy.
FTFY
I'll always be proud to be part of the gaming community. Even if that sounds silly. Even if there are assholes. Even if shit like this goes on. I'd rather deal with an asshole gamer than any other kind of asshole.

You're not about to examine sporting events, or any other cultural niche to condemn that behaviour but gamers? Yeah, you're down with that I see. Why? Because there's a social stigma surrounding it even now that makes it wrong to display aggression in that field, but you're not going to talk about the literal riots sports have created.
How dare people enjoy things I don't like!
FTFY
But especially when it's just a dumb hobby [editline]15th February 2018[/editline] Video games may have had a negative perception in the 80s-90s but it is a billion dollar industry right now

Philadelphia Eagle fans for instance have a stereotype for being absolute scum because of the riots and ridiculous shit they do throughout many seasons. It doesn't matter if there are plenty of Eagle fans whom are completely decent, the large sum of people that did stupid shit tainted the fanbase in the eyes of the majority. Gamers are going to go through the same thing because of this and whether it's rightly deserved or not it's at least worth pointing out that there are reasons why people shit on the gaming community and that's because anyone's first experience playing a multiplayer game will likely end up like the majority of my experiences.
So why are you spending your time shitting a community who's sins total in the fields of "Are rude fucking cunts" compared to the faults of groups that, you know, riot and destroy property?
Because it's the topic? We're talking about a hashtag that aims to restore the image of 'gamers' from negative stereotypes. If I were in another topic outside of this then I'd spend my time talking about that issue. Kind of evident my dude, lets not derail into what other groups do or whom truly deserves scrutiny.
Video games may have had a negative perception in the 80s-90s but it is a billion dollar industry right now
Judging by the backlash, I'd say they're still pretty negative. But overall most people don't care.
