YouTubers is now required to be approved partners before being able to use external links in cards

According to several YouTube creators, the site is no longer allowing them to add external links in the cards at the end of their videos, unless they enable their channel for monetization through YouTube’s Partner Program. While channels don’t have to actually enable monetization on individual videos, the channel must join the program for external link cards to work.
The sudden change left some creators confused about why they suddenly couldn’t link to their Patreon accounts.

YouTube has released a statement to explain the change:
In order to use externally-linking end cards in videos, creators are being asked to join the YouTube Partner program, so that we can evaluate the validity of the channel, as well as determine whether the channel is following our community guidelines and advertiser policies. This update is meant to curb abuse and does not affect current YouTube partners or existing end cards. Additionally channels do not have to actually monetize any videos as part of this requirement.

i mean it is kinda dumb to remove an existing feature and give it to a select amount of people, but at the same time, becoming a partner isnt exactly hard? all i do is basically upload copyrighted music and im a partner, sooo...
Thats fun. If you are banned by adsense you can not use links at all then. :v:
Good thing I became a Partner when YouTube was small and they'd dish out the offer to everyone.
Man, YouTube is becoming more and more difficult and binding to use. Wonder if we'll get an alternative website at some point, probably not since they're to big to fail.
:bullshit:
What the fuck. It's like they're trying to scare people away from Youtube.
I cant wait to the day i see YouTube die.
They were cool before they got greedy.
So, small channels who use Patreon to fund their channel are completely fucked now?
I am beginning to hate YouTube more and more, pulling shit like this.
Don't know if it's just a lie that has been repeated multiple times but:
YouTube is a big money sink that doesn't even pay for itself for Alphabet, that's why they're trying to correct this and why nobody competes with them because they'd go bankrupt once everyone started uploading their shit to them and they don't limit it like YouTube.

Small channels are just fucked in general. If you're not already a big or medium-sized channel on YT, the likelihood of any sustainable growth is basically nill at this point unless you're willing to quit your day job and do nothing but gameplay videos 2-3 times a day, 7 days a week for at least a year or two while also being charming/funny/creative enough to retain any kind of actual audience - and that's assuming you're lucky enough to not get a single demonetised video in your entire run.
YouTube is dead. Long live Twitch.
So, small channels who use Patreon to fund their channel are completely fucked now?
No, they just have to do a "link to my patreon is in the description" thing.
Can't you just bypass this by adding spaces and random symbols and stuff?
For example, patreon.com turns to p atre on [.] c om
That's what those comment bots do all the time, it should work with video descriptions too.
Or just say it in the video and edit a text in? I think they haven't thought this completely through.
???
video descriptions are still fine, anyone can put any link in the description
I wonder if YouTube is going to fail at some point now or lose to a competitor.
Fail? Probably not, but losing to a competitor might be possible.
I don't think that will ever happen, because the average watcher isn't affected by their bullshit.
snip
Youtube really needs a competitor worth their time.
Afaik tho youtube is still operating at a loss, i wouldnt blame them to want more $$ from it, especially because adpocalypse.
You didn't get paid shit on Youtube when it first started and now it's back to that point.
Youtube was never meant to be a career, people who successfully did so are lucky beyond words.
Youtube, in my opinion, was always meant to just be a site to have fun and post goofs; not to become a internet celebrity and make loads of dosh.
However I am a pretty big fan of a few certain high budget Youtube shows so it's still a bummer that it's playing out like it is.
I think most people knew this was coming at some point.
If you can have a viewerbase on it, YouTube livestreaming > Twitch (examples such as people like Ice Poseidon if they can get away with platform switching). Twitch banning is so fucking annoyingly personal and the things you get banned for are so stretched depending on the person. YouTube player always works so much better and has shit like rewinding too, when it comes to multi streaming site platform things like tournaments I would open YouTube and do a popout Twitch chat
I haven't toyed around enough with YT streaming to know, but aren't they really hard on copyright vs Twitch? Twitch just mutes the sections of your stream where copyrighted music plays when the VOD is uploaded, but generally it's intact. YouTube on the other hand can copyright-strike you and take away features unless you play nice.
Before going all hulk-mode on this; Is signing up to be a partner and gain access to linking just a formality or is it actually difficult?
The don't seem to talk about it in the article but does it physically prevent you from say typing out "www.google.com" or anything in that format or does it just not make it a hyperlink?
Because if it's the former you could literally just add a space and be A okay.
Before going all hulk-mode on this; Is signing up to be a partner and gain access to linking just a formality or is it actually difficult?
Its pretty much a formality but it does limit you under a load of terms and legal bullshit on what you can and can't upload after, gameplay videos as a partner can be a bit of a grey area if you're thinking of monetizing them, but if you're not you really don't have to care. If you're only using partner to get access to other features and not for the money shit, it wont effect you.
My channel is tiny and doesn't have 10,000 lifetime views, so I can't do this even if I'm a partner because of the monetization requirement. Cool.

If you've got like somewhere in the ballpark of 10 videos of decent to better quality, you could link to one every once and in while on a relevant subreddit. I had a video hit like 2k views in a day because I linked to it on the fallout subreddit. (Note: don't over do this or you'll get hit regarding self promotion or something)
I'm pretty sure this isn't anything new, I think I saw this two years ago already.
[editline]29th September 2017[/editline]
Also, iirc, everyone gets to be a youtube partner as long as you just confirm your account using a phone number. At least it was like that, like I've said, two years ago when I re-read all the youtube stuff

I barely upload anything at all and I'm eligible for it!
I thought this had been the case for a while? When I read the rules about this last year when making a few videos that ultimately would link to Gumroad, I found you're not supposed (actually I think I already wasn't allowed) to put external links at the end of the video using their card system. It had to be links in the description.

nah, if you're a new twitch streamer you have no chance of getting big unless you're extraordinarily entertaining, you're amazingly good at the games you play, or if you have nice tits/ass and show it off in low cut shirts. The only way to get big is to be friendly with an already big streamer so that they'll host your channel when they aren't streaming or tell their viewers to check you out.
I seriously don't understand where the issue is with that. There was a time period where a shitton of reuploaders where coming out of nowhere and enabling monetization straight away. Blame those people instead of youtube being forced to do something against that. It's probably the same shit going on again but this time for embedded links inside a video.
