As of this post the incident was ongoing. The source will likely update in the next few hours so it's not six or seven lines of initial report.

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -
Emergency crews responded to a huge fire at a plant in Caldwell County Friday afternoon.
The fire broke out at the Old Shuford Mill on Falls Avenue in Granite Falls, right across the street from the Granite Falls Police Department.
It is not clear how the fire may have started or if any injuries were reported.
The building was the home to the Save the Machine Computer Preservation Group. They are reporting that all artifacts and systems stored in the building, likely including a Cray J98 supercomputer, have been lost.

Update: It seems all 16 fire departments in Cadwell County are on scene. Surrounding homes have been evacuated. As of 10PM EST the fire was only 30% contained.

That is just fuckin awful news.
Dude what. I live in Raleigh. I had no idea this was a thing. Shit that's a shame, I would have really liked to have seen that..
I bet one of those old machines failed and ignited :(
Going to place my bets on a power supply going thermo-nuclear.

It isn't unknown, actually.
My Silicon Graphics Onyx has an On-Line Supply module that was covered under a factory recall in the 90's because they had a habit of failing and catching fire. Most of them have long since been weeded out but a few people never got the memo and there have been recalled units found still installed in machines.

Why do you have an SGI Onyx? Honest question lol
Hi, I live in [redacted]. I bought these computers from Boeing Surplus a while back but I don't need them anymore. Want them?
It literally followed me home. :v:
Anyways, a statement form the co-founder.
Hi folks, co-founder of Save the Machine here. You are correct that our collection isn't huge, and we had a small selection of our machines in the facility that were lost. StM was part of Foothills Community Workshop in Granite Falls, NC. The workshop contained a full electronics lab, various server / IT equipment, full woodworking and metal working shops, ham radio station, laser cutters, and a science lab. All this with about 30 regular members. It was a really cool place to go spend a Saturday afternoon.
Off the top of my head, here are a few of the systems lost today:
Macintosh Plus
PET 4032-12
IBM PC (5150)
VIC20
Heathkit H8
Hewitt Packard HP-85A
Hewitt Packard HP-86b
AS/400 (eSeries)
Power Mac G4 Cube
IMSAI 8080
Sinclair 1000
A couple of DEC servers
Various G3/G4 machines
We don't know the future of StM or FCW at this time. I can tell you, however, that we'll maintain our Facebook presence and keep doing our best to save machines.
I'll post updates as I have them. Thanks

I went by there this afternoon. Insane how high the flames were. Hope everyone fighting it stays safe.
It kinda gave me flashbacks of the old textile plant Beacon that burned down a few years ago in Swannanoa, NC
A little bit of history lost is always a depressing thing. Best of wishes to the folks at the museum for the future, I hope this isn't the end for them.
