A ship sent to investigate an SOS distress call encounters an alien that begins to kill the crew members one by one.
The original. Pretty much widely regarded as an masterpiece of cinema and is considered one of the finest horror films ever created. Nothing really needs to be said about this gem.
57 years after the original attack, Ripley and a crew of marines return to the planet to kill the remaining aliens that have slaughtered the colonists on the planet.
The much loved sequel. Most people love it and it's widely seen as the perfect way to follow up any film, some would disagree since it strayed away from it's horror origins and goes more into the action element.
 Alien 3
Alien 3 is a 1992 American science-fiction horror film directed by David Fincher in his directorial debut, produced by Gordon Carroll, David Giler and Walter Hill, and written by Giler, Hill and Larry Ferguson from a story by Vincent Ward
This film is complicated. It went through one of the most hellish pre production periods in history and changed script several times. Including weird shit like wooden planets and even scripts with no xenomorphs. Fincher went through hell making it and had fuck loads of problems in his way. Ultimately the film has two cuts, Assembly cut and Theatrical cut. While I haven't personally seen both, people seem to say the Assembly edition is far better since it changes certain scenes and adds others, it adds up to 29 more minutes of screen time, might be worth checking out but the theatrical cut is certainly hot crap.
The fourth film in the Alie- hahaahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA FUCK YOU THIS FILM IS SO FUCKING BAD
Yeah this film is fucking awful, please avoid and pretend it doesn't exist.
 Prometheus
[t] https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a3/Prometheusposterfixed.jpg [/t]
Prometheus is a 2012 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, and starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron.
This film seems to have people split. Lots of fans hate it and lots seem to like it. It's technically not an Alien film but it is set in the same universe and serves as the prequel to the original. I personally enjoy it but it certainly has flaws, you might want to check it out.
 UPCOMING SHIT
 Alien: Covenant
[t] http://www.indiewire.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/alien-covenant-poster.jpg [/t]
Headed toward a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew members of the colony ship Covenant discover what they believe to be an uncharted paradise, but it is actually a dark, menacing world in which the only inhabitant is the synthetic David (Michael Fassbender), a survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
Slated for May 2017, let's all fucking hope it's good yeah? Personally it looks cool from the trailer but it doesn't look like it's going to be too original but hey, early days right?
 Blomkamp's Alien

We know little about this film, but we do know that it's going to make Alien 3 and Resurrection non canon since it's going to be about Ripley, Newt and Hicks who all survived after Aliens.
Not very optimistic about covenant but I hope blomkamp's movie is a thing that'll actually happen

I'm praying covenant film is great not just so we get our first proper good alien film in YEARS but so Sega make Isolation II. That game is awesome as hell but unlikely to see a sequel since Sega had retarded sale goals.

Speaking of Isolation, I'd love to buy it on the chrimbo sale but feel like it's gonna get boring after the first few hours. Looks great tho

It's got a better story than Aliens and it's a great horror game, honestly you're doing yourself a disservice by not having it.
I hate to be the guy who does it, but this, according to FOX themselves, is legitimately Cannon to the current franchise.

Hicks really is alive.
No matter how awful 4 is, it's not the worst thing in the alien franchise because of the above abomination.
Alien is the best sci-fi horror film ever yo nothing will ever beat it
Alien's pacing is so good it always makes two hours seem like 30 minutes. The film is simply amazing as hell.

Not gonna lie, I hated that they just killed Newt and Hicks off at the beginning of 3. I don't necessarily want him back, even though Michael Biehn would return for the role, but if they had given him and Newt a better send-off, I'd have been okay with it.
Resurrection is the biggest mess of a cinematic production i've ever seen - nothing feels like it fits, everything is disjointed and disconnected. all the stuff just, i don't know, happens? even the visuals are shit, especially the slimy CG xenos.
Are we ever gonna find out what happened after prometheus? Or is that what the new one is about?
Hicks really is alive.

Selective amnesia is fantastic.

I'm pretty sure there was a book series that ignored everything after Aliens.

I'd kill for a new Isolation game. I have already over 50 hours of gameplay in the first one. Hiding under desks for 10's of hours has never been more fun.
Are we ever gonna find out what happened after prometheus? Or is that what the new one is about?
The trailer had a scene about them finding dogtags in the derelict, and I'm guessing that it has something to do with Prometheus.
I'm a huge Alien enthusiast and I liked Alien³, Prometheus and even Colonial Marines.
But not Resurrection, because come on you're pushing it
The only good thing in Resurrection is the art direction, one of the best in the series, and that's because I really had to look hard for something good in that film. The cast could also have been good but the characters are shit.
On a scale to one to please jesus christ never again, how terrifying is Alien: Isolation?
I'm midly curious about the game. But I also usually hate horror, pretty badly. To tell you how bad my fears are, the (Undertale spoilers) [sp]Photoshop Flowry fight[/sp] terrifies me and crappy spookypastas do too.
What, no love for Aliens fighting Predators? I remember before AvP2 the directors were active in various fan forums, saying all the right things. When does that even happen? And then that movie is what we got. Nevermind, forget I said anything.

Just below "Jesus Christ never again" because it's fucking good and I want to replay it every year at least.
I don't see a reference to the best alien band there is, alien ant farm :weeb:
i love the world alien isolation specifically built, especially the look of the station and the people on it. it's a shame alien never expands on it's universe. personally, i'd think it would be awesome to see a novel or comic just based on shipping freight around the galaxy with the dirty japanese-american 70s-80s aesthetic. just look at some of this concept art for the inhabitants of sevastopol station.

By those standards it'll probably be jesus christ never again but I do implore you to try it anyway. It should be on sale.
Going to start catching up on the alien canon as my favorite artist is doing a comic based on the series.
I assume I just need to watch the movies? Any extra comics or books?

I'm pretty desensitized to horror in general but A:I forced me into taking breaks. By far and away the scariest game I ever played ...
However
I'm not gonna say you will, but I feel confident in saying most people get use to the Alien, they're never truely settled when it's around, but after prolonged exposure to it you 'stop giving a shit' and just get on with the task at hand.

Just the movies, though the status of a canon is dubious. I'd recommend Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 (assembly cut) and then Prometheus. I don't like Alien 3 but maybe you will. Don't bother with Resurrection or the AvP movies.
Blomkamp's planned film will act as a sequel to the first two films as if Alien 3 never happened. Prometheus contradicts AvP because Ridley Scott never watched those godawful films and they're not really part of the franchise anyway.
Right, the last thing we need is Aliens on earth before Ripley was even born (AvP arrrgh).
