Barnaby Joyce's dual citizenship debacle has helped inspire the choice of Kwaussie as Australia's official word of the year. The Australian National Dictionary Centre director Amanda Laugesen says Kwaussie - a blend of Kiwi and Aussie - came to prominence particularly on social media during the constitutional crisis that engulfed several senators and MPs who discovered they were dual citizens this year. Joyce was forced to contest a by-election last Saturday, which he won in a convincing landslide, after the High Court found him to be a dual New Zealand-Australian citizen. Dr Laugesen said the centre believed that Kwaussie was first used in a 2002 New Zealand newspaper in relation to actor Russell Crowe. "He was described as a Kwaussie - what you get when you cross a Kiwi who can't decide whether they're a Kiwi or an Aussie," she said. "Subsequent evidence suggests its use is predominantly Australian, found chiefly in social media, and also found with spelling variants including Kwozzie and Kwozzy. "Thanks to the two Kwaussies identified as ineligible to sit in parliament, Barnaby Joyce and Greens senator Scott Ludlam, the term is now becoming better known."
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/lifestyle/news/article.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=11952706
First I've heard of this word.. Sounds close to cozzie, and I'd rather not picture pollies in budgey smugglers.
a blend of Kiwi and Aussie
Jesus, how equally disgusting and terrifying.
I've never heard this word used before in my life.
Sadly we make up silly words all the time.
What a stupid fucken word, if I heard anyone say that id think they're a wanker Never heard it in my life either, glad I haven't
First I've heard of this word.. Sounds close to cozzie, and I'd rather not picture pollies in budgey smugglers.
I know some of those words, I think I'm close to cracking the code
Will this mean there will be a Kwaussie Empire mod for Hearts of Iron IV in the near future?
they're obviously just fans of a rickety amusement park across the world.
can we call canadians + americans canadicans or amerinadians tia
I will always be astonished at kangaroo digeridoo language
They probably just went with it because every other candidate would have been a curse word
Is it pronounced like Quasi from Quasimodo?
Kiwi mod of the year
As a Strayan who's been cracking open tinnies for 22 years and who only just came back from a 12 day holiday to our supposed "independent" neighbour, I've literally never heard this term before If it weren't for the obscure newspaper article from 2002, I would have dared suggest that the word was literally just made up by the people doing the word of the year thingo
I'm Australian and i don't fucking understand this.
Words of the year are always some stupid bullshit nobody in reality actually says. It's like they just get a collection of words, that may or may not describe the whole year and they choose based on what their socioeconomic woes are at the moment. The German word of the year in 2016 was "smombie", which is a combination of smartphone and zombie, which means dose goshdarned kids always lookin' at their smartphones wit no care in the world
Is a Kwaussie only a quasi-Aussie?
The fuck is this shit? I have heard nobody say this, I have seen nobody write this, I know of no man, woman, child, or Kiwi who would use this. Who made this shit up?
can we call canadians + americans canadicans or amerinadians tia
Why not Americanadians
