Need for Speed: Payback is a Microtransaction Hell
That’s why I say Payback is the first game completely ruined by loot boxes. It’s an otherwise-good racing game that is just wrecked by this stupid monetization scheme. What did it benefit Need for Speed to get rid of under-the-hood customization? What did it benefit Need for Speed to tie your car’s top speed, its braking power, and so on to a Collectible Card Game, then dole those cards out so painfully slowly that you’re forced to either pay up or waste your time running old races? And then to tie the cards you’re not using to a specific car?
There’s something like 100-plus vehicles in Payback. I saw eleven of them. After getting one car in each division, collecting the five derelicts, and buying a second Charger because I’m a sucker for Chargers, I just stopped caring. There was no way I was grinding enough Speed Cards to upgrade another vehicle. Hell, I wasted enough time just trying to get my core cars up to par and make it through the campaign.
Don't hate EA, they're being good to us for giving us such 'consumer spending opportunities'
The franchise is dead. EA's greed killed it.

The franchise has been dead for 10 years now
I feel really sorry for ghost games in this whole dissaster.
Imagine working hard to be recognized, wanting to revive a dying franchise, but being forced to put a system like that in place.
Thankfully people are smart enough to target EA, and not Ghost.

I almost had hopes this one could be better and from the review it isn't all bad really.
Just the gutted upgrade system that was replaces by microtransaction and RNG hell is what kills this game.
Other than the card system, its a pretty good arcade game.
Flipside is theres like no anti-cheat, so you can just use cheat engine to set your speed cards and cash.
Currently rocking 5 billion each. :dogcited:
even actual mobile racing games aren't as gross as this

ghost is just the latest in a long list of developers that have been handed the franchise and told to do something with it. Most people don't really know who they are, since their only prior game is nfs 2015 and nobody liked that either. It is a lot different IMO than criterion where they had made a name for themselves prior with burnout, and then years later put out most wanted 2012.
Kill this trash and bring back Need For Speed World. If I'm going to play a microtransaction fest I might as well play one I actually enjoy and aren't spending $60 for.

I'd say 5 years or so. The Criterion developed ones were decent. The completely Ghost Games developed entries have been trash.
NFS world was a blast, arcadey as hell but still had a high skill ceiling. It was killed to make way for the mediocrity that was NFS 2015 and now this
A friend of mine, massive fan of the series who spent a lot of time with NFS World, told me that so far it feels like the player is getting pressured to spend money more often in Payback than in a fucking 2010 free to play title. This is insane.
[editline]12th November 2017[/editline]
Payback might be the worst offender yet.
I'm still playing Need For Speed 3, High Stakes and Porsche Unleashed every now and then. Pinnacle of the series, especially High Stakes.

I honestly kinda wanted a reboot of Motor City Online, which was the NFS World of my time. It was so ahead of its time.

Need for Greed: Paycheck
I think we should form some sort of rating system for this sort of thing. Like a list of factors that games can be objectively graded on and push it within the community.
Publishers could fear the backlash of putting certain types of things in their game (like bad lootboxes vs good ones) out fear of bad press. You could tell your friend they shouldn't purchase a game because they're supporting a publisher that turned a well-rated franchise into one with an extremely high scum score.
As it stands it's far too much of a grey area/is subjective. I cant even begin to think about how I would go about telling my friends (even progressives that would want to) to stop supporting certain games or publishers and I don't think we're going to see much change until people like us can convince our "normal" friends that this is going on (and of course let them decide for themselves, but with a more informed mind).
what a shame. ive been looking for a good arcade racer for a while and this looked good up until i saw reports of this. burn in hell, EA

Well there really shouldn't be any anti-cheat in a singleplayer game
Need for speed sucks anyway.
The moment the franchise went into Burnout territory, it died and never came back.
The microtransactions are just one of the many nails in the coffin.
Yet another game I won't even give the time of day to.
This HAS to stop at some point right?
Surely the companies will realise that the hate they are getting for this simply isn't worth it, right?
shit like this is why i'm so sad over EA Black Box's shutdown
they made ALL of the classic NFS games, not just underground and beyond, but high stakes, porsche unleashed, etc.
they were even the lead developers behind World, which was designed to be really accessible for all players despite it being f2p. if there's anyone who knows how to make a great nfs game it's them, and afaik their core team members are all scattered around different companies now, some of them even working on obscure (at least now imo) hockey games
imagine working on fun racing games and then being relocated to another division to work on NHL

It's a single-player game with lootboxes?
What the fuck

Eh? Everything pre-Hot Pursuit 2 is EA Vancouver / EA Seattle, while Black Box wasn't acquired until 2002. (Source)

shit, forgot about that. must have gotten them mixed up
they still shared a fair amount of employees between studios tho, like the senior environment designer and some track designers between games, afaik
I feel like there hasn't been a good driving game in a while. Gran Turismo Sport was super disappointing, Forza 7 was kinda whatever, and now this. Hopefully The Crew 2 does something crazy good.
Can't wait to see what form Anthem's microtransactions takes.

NFS 2015 was a beautiful looking game, my complaints are the lack of daytime, and the cringey acting in the constant live action cutscenes. The customization and tuneability was fantastic.

'05 Most Wanted will forever be my favourite
The last NFS game I played was I think Carbon on the Wii. I found the driving with the wiimote as a steering wheel so interesting. I remember wasting hours on that, and NFS Underground 2 on the GameCube. I remember in Underground 2 I got through like the entire game with a souped-up Honda Civic.
