A young girl feeding a sea lion on a dock in Steveston Harbour in Richmond, British Columbia was yanked into the water by the massive marine mammal, and the terrifying moments were caught on video that was posted to YouTube.

The girl is fine, a bystander jumped in to rescue her.
Why would they make the YouTube link in the sentence you posted not take you to YouTube?

Was gonna post it but you beat me to it
You'd perhaps expect the bystander effect to take hold and at least cause enough of a delay that it gets away/seriously hurts her. Because I doubt there would have been much time. But damn he just went right in, what a good dude.
-snip sry didnt watch video properly im tired- :(

I'd say his good response time cancels out with the fact that he let a small child get near a large predator
Just because humans are at the top of the food chain doesn't mean we're not still made of tasty meat, people should remember that.

They might not be a bystander though, in which case the bystander effect doesn't really apply (might be family etc). This isn't the first time this has happened either, a seal grabbed a 5 year old off a dock in 2009 and I've heard plenty of other stories here and there. It's important to keep in mind that although some animals don't seem interested in humans at all, that's sometimes entirely because of their size and a smaller human might still seem like a good snack. It's a real bad idea to feed wild animals, and a real bad idea to get this close to an animal as heavy as a bear that you're feeding.

I thought it was common knowledge Humans taste like shit?
I wouldn't have jumped in. Not because it's not my problem but because if I had to, I can't beat a sea lion in its natural habitat. I probably can't even beat one on land either, they're huge and fat so punches and kicks are ineffective.
Usually videos with these types of titles and thumbnails are fake shit.
at least he caught it on video clearly and didn't see if the gentleman or child were ok.
I guess you skipped the part where he was pulling the guy out of the water and later asking him two times if he is all right and if he is injured.

That was a fucking strong as shit pull, what the fuck
That was a fucking strong as shit pull, what the fuck
That girl is around 30kg and the sea lion is probably 4-5 times bigger and is basically one giant muscle from nose to... back flipper.
I wonder what the sea lion's motivation was.
Can we just appreciate how the guy operating the camera not only kept it all centered and steady, but also used landscape. He's the real hero

pls forgive, i saw this video hours ago and i think i just forgot the detail, my mistake.
I wonder what the sea lion's motivation was.
We can safely assume it's either:
1) "It's just a prank, bro" (turns out intelligent non-human mammals can be assholes, who'da thunk it)
or
2) What basically amounts to when people choose their own lobster.

yeah, to other humans
i doubt animals are as picky as we are
I was pausing the video trying to see if she hit her head before I realized how bad it would look if someone walked in..

Huh, they just fuck right off to wherever they are going, presumably home, without stopping.
They were very very rude. I don't know if that man was related, but god damn if he was just a stranger, the way they just walk off really sits heavily in my stomach. Like they didn't even ask if he was alright or thank him profusely.
Rude cunts.

They were feeding bread crumbs to it so it's obvious that it thought that the little girl still had food on her person.
-snip nevermind-
What sort of stupid cunt let's their child do that

They are probably related, you can see he's promptly following them as they are leaving. He's probably her grandfather or something.
Man that dude just went into Dad Mode instantly, like, "Nah fuck that shit, this ain't happening on my watch."

I believe someone said the man who leapt in was the girl's grandfather, and her mother/grandmother took her away to get her away from the cameras (understandably, you don't want someone filming your traumatised child). Apparently the girl calls out to her granddad and he tells her he's fine.
So... calling them rude cunts might be jumping the gun a bit. Better to know the details before you go tossing insults.
I think if the sea lion wanted to hurt her it would have, possibly just a bit of rough play, it had more than enough time to grab an arm or leg before grandad jumped in. But who knows, could have been chargin its lazorz
Everyone was too distracted to help the invisible man who also got pulled in :(

I think because sea lions/seals look like cute gentle water dogs people drop their guard.
It's easy to not realize they they are actually big strong animals that can be very aggressive, and even if they are just playing their teeth can easily go straight through your bones.
