Iger didn't disclose the name of the film, but said Disney isn't paying. The company — which is working with federal investigators — is now waiting to see if the hackers makes good on the threat and release the movie. Iger's comments came during a town hall meeting with ABC employees in New York City, according to multiple sources. Disney's upcoming theatrical release slate include Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which opens this Friday, and Cars 3 (June 16). The Disney chief said the hackers demanded that a huge sum be paid on Bitcoin. They are threatening to release five minutes of the film the first time and then in 20-minute chunks until their financial demands are met.
Isn't it generally a bad idea to go against Disney? Like, this seems like it could very easily go poorly for the hackers.

Out of all movies that's the one they picked to hijack & threaten to pirate, that's no coincidence.
Source?
It's a mega corporation that has basically hand written us copyright law for the past 50+ years and is successful in most court cases because of that.
am i in a cyberpunk world? has it finally happened? did The Machine work? does it dream?

It might just be smart just to ignore it and let it leak, most movie goers don't even know torrents exist. You could be opening your self up to more attacks in the future as well with much bigger ransoms.
They're filthy rich, the ransom is going to be a water drop for them anyway Part of me wants them to lose hard tho
Problem is sometimes, the Ransomers(?) do not follow through and release it anyway.
paying the ransom sounds safe, sure, but like Omni said, following through with getting your content back without it being leaked by the same party is a different monster especially when we're talking about a company that most people don't even have feelings for compared to a ransomware attack on a random person's computer they won't pay em, Netflix didn't pay for OITNB, I somehow doubt Disney would even bother negotiating
Disney won't pay. They will invest that money into ruining the people who tried to fuck with them instead.

can you imagine it being a hacker who actually gets a disney movie before it's released, living the dream demanding a ransom, and finding that disney takes notice their freaking CEO makes a public statement about it they say "fuck off lol we aint paying shit"
lmao imagine if it was Star Wars
If they pay the ransom, it'll only encourage other hackers to do the same thing.
They shouldn't pay. First of all the mass majority of the Pirates of the Caribbeans base will be oblivious of a hacked early released torrent, and second of all they can't be trusted and feeding them money will just encourage future ransoms to Disney.
Out of all movies that's the one they picked to hijack & threaten to pirate, that's no coincidence.
I know, with the Indy 500 coming up this month it makes perfect sense for them to go after Cars 3 like that.
they shouldn't pay, it's going to flop anyways so it's not like they'll be making more money by restricting the release
If they pay the ransom, it'll only encourage other hackers to do the same thing.
Well it's not like other hackers really can do the same thing. The servers of Disney (and pretty much all other large corporations) are the best-guarded non-military servers out there.
Paying them would ensure nothing, they could release it anyway. This is the first principle in dealing with blackmail.
I actually wouldn't be surprised if it's more than just Pirates 5, there would be way more money on the line if they had a collection of films.
fuck that leak the movies.
send in seal team mick. disney does not negotiate.
lmao imagine if it was Star Wars
It's gone downhill since the force awakens, rouge one wasn't any good either but the CGI was nice.

Had I known hackers were willing to steal upcoming movies, I would've hired them to take that Emoji movie from Sony.
