I am pretty sure it's possible to play it on a retail version.
better off playing original with GMDX
GMDX 9.0 comes out in June but you can ask for the download on the website now if you want to test it. I'd maybe wait for that instead of playing this since it seems to be more faithful to the art style if anything.

Revision does rebalance things, but a lot of people didn't respond positively to the changes.
Is this the one where they couldn't even be assed to actually translate anything so they just wrote gibberish in Mandarin?

Words that are shown upside down, rotated left/right, flipped horizontally, etc. And words that are totally random. And there are words that are linguistically correct but out of place, such as a grocery store sign that says "Time of death". Let me know if you are interested in fixing those and I'll point them out for you.
some of the new level design is pretty iffy. in og deus ex, places and secret areas serve some purpose or another within the environment. in revision, a lot of their places and secret areas serve as just places and secret areas. nothign wrogn with that kind of design, but it doesnt mesh with the rest of the game imo. still, revision is worth at least 1 playthru imo

In the original, Walton Simons and Bob Page are in a large hallway discussing their plans. It makes sense because maybe they were walking along and had the talk and stopped, or ran into each other in the hallway to chat. In Revision, they're in a large board room with a circular table, with them standing in the middle, as if they said "Let's walk into this board room and go out of our way to stand in the exact middle of the table to talk." It doesn't really make much sense when you think about it like that. Even if they were there for a meeting and talked afterwards, they wouldn't navigate to the center of a huge table to chat. They'd do that to the side or something. This is a really minor point but it sort of sets the stage for a lack of attention to detail for the rest of the mod. They often throw things in because it looks pretty, not because it makes sense in the greater context of the rest of the world. Deus Ex is a game about attention to detail, so this sorta takes away more than it adds in my opinion.

The two of them were sat on the end of a desk watching the news feeds and discussing the changing world ahead.

Eugh, that UNATCO, gross. Looking at it gives me that feeling you get when you walk into a nasty old public building that hasn't been renovated since the 90s and the carpet and walls are grungy as fuck and you can practically smell the dirt and mildew.
While Revision certainly looks nice, it fucks the gameplay up hard. GMDX is the best way to enjoy DX1, even for players new to the game - loads of quality of life features, a little more weapon variety, smarter AI and un-fucking otherwise irrelevant skills, not to mention graphical improvements of its own which are a lot more subtle but still a big step up.
Isn't there a point in Revision where there are snipers scattered around which can instantly kill you with a headshot upon seeing you?
