Nintendo faces lawsuit over the Switch's detachable controllers
The Nintendo Switch certainly isn't the first gaming tablet, but is it directly riffing on others' ideas? Gamevice thinks so. The accessory maker is suing Nintendo for allegedly violating a patent for concepts used in the Wikipad, its gaming-oriented Android slate, as well as its namesake add-on controllers for phones and tablets. According to the suit, the Switch and its removable Joy-Con controllers are too close to Gamevice's vision of a combination of detachable game controller and a device with a "flexible bridge section." Not surprisingly, the lawsuit calls for both damages and a ban on Switch sales.
Gamevice declined to comment on the lawsuit. We've reached out to Nintendo as well, and will let you know if it has a response.
Goooooood fucking luck.
Oh, it's the same guys who tried to sue Nintendo over glasses-free 3D

Jokes on them, you can't take them off the shelves if there's none in the first place

That one's a lot closer to the Wikipad design too, what with the controller unit being a single piece and the tablet not having any other function than being a tablet, unlike the Switch's ability to plug into TVs and be a home console.
has there ever been a more blatant example of 'we want money' than these people trying to sue nintendo twice
I don't think this lawsuit is going anywhere.
If "controller attaches to mobile device" is the only requirement, couldn't Gamevice be sued for "plagarizing" the iControlPad
or even Moga because their controllers have "flexible bridge sections"

this isnt about protecting their ip. this is about making money, and the switch makes a lot of cash
As if Nintendo is gonna let them win

I'm not very familiar with law, but wouldn't the mere existence of the Moga controllers and iControlPad (the latter especially) basically make the lawsuit even more likely to achieve absolutely nothing as it would count as "prior art".
Can you even play the switch without the joycon controllers? I would think that mobile devices don't require controllers to play any of it's games.
looking at their site, it looks like overpriced shite

Well there is a Switch Pro controller. And I know that you can use your finger to go through the menu. Aside from that, I don't think so.
good luck, nintendo was granted patents on the controller arrangement
