So much for him wanting to focus on original projects then.

The question is now if Disney/Lucasfilm couldn't find any director willing to work with them on the project.
What a downer.
EP 7 was one of the most forgettable event films I've seen. "member this" and "things I know" bullshit aside, it just wasn't that good. Maybe I'll pass on EP 9 then.
Fuck. I hope he's learned from his mistakes.

They probably asked him because his Star Wars film was successful, Rian's film is still an unknown at the moment (it'll probably make beaucoup bucks even if it sucks) and Rian probably turned it down because directing back to back Star Wars movies would probably be too stressful.
couldn't they just get johnson for another round?
Return of the Jedi remake confirmed!
.... In all seriousness, this is still a big step up from Colin. The characters should be great, at least.
TFA > Rogue One
so I'm looking forward to this

I don't think I'll ever agree with this, because at least Rogue One was a touch more original, The Force Awakens was just a rehash of two far superior films with nothing new brought to the table.
It was quite literally just the same old shit sold to you again but slightly different, it was the safest damn movie in the universe and I respect Rogue One more for at least trying some new things.
Originality complaints are valid, but I thought he did a great job with TFA overall.

Exactly this, TFA was a solid movie. Very well made, obviously a lot of effort was put into it, and the
performances were good.
i trust him more than the jurassic world guy at least

I'm not sure if they'll ever top Rogue One, I thought it was the freshest thing to happen to the franchise since the original trilogy. It's biggest flaw is the first half being so formulaic and forgettable, not even holding a candle to the second act and hurting the characters in the process.
They need to quit playing it so safe. Make it just a little more gritty, take risks, try something new. You know, what made Star Wars so great in the first place. Please.
As far as the originality goes, I can see why someone who want to play it safe. After the backlash of the prequels, I'd imagine no director wants to fuck up Star Wars. It would make sense that they would go a bit safer to see the reactions.

it wasn't a solid movie at all, worst john williams track ever with a poor musical director and conductor, it ruined the movie.
you need a director who can have a musical ear.
I already have some friends cursing over this, calling JJ a "hack fraud." And not in the RLM joke sort of way.
Honestly, despite the lack of originality, I thought Ep 7 was exactly what Star Wars needed to give people a shot in the arm and remind them again about what made Star Wars good. No boring political bullshit, action that was good but not stupid, actual interesting sets and effects instead of the majority of the movie being shot in front of a blue screen. I get the complaints, I really do, but at the same time, we needed a familiar and solid foundation to build from after the mess that was the prequels. Ep 7 delivered on that, originality and "mary sue" complaints aside.
As someone who didn't watch any of the Star Wars movies until recently, I thought TFA was really good. I can see why people who grew up with the films or are really big fans see it as a little unoriginal but I think it's a good introduction to the films for new fans or younger fans.
I like JJ Abrams movies. Hopefully he can make a good film that a lot of people can enjoy.

TFA was what it needed to be, i had a lot of problems with it but it did its job successfully. closing out the trilogy will require something different though. i don't want another movie filled with quippy references to the old stuff
I think TFA is as good as it could of been. Disney needed this movie to be to solid and a reboot to the franchise and took the safest route possible. Nothing wrong with that, JJ did a good job, using actual sets, props, and good enough story. We'll see what the Last Jedi brings.

Rouge one was also fucked over by Disney's meddling. The first 45 minutes of the movie were subject to re-shoots and rewrites, which is why it drags on. It was supposed to feel like a WW2 movie, but starwars. The latter part of the movie is very enjoyable, while the first half just drags on. I still like it far more than TFA, since TFA is just too safe, ful of repeated ideas, and is concluded by the power of deus ex machina.
J.J. Typically learns from his past film mistakes and tries to correct them though. That or he tries to avoid repeating them by doing the opposite.
Hell yeah. Aside from being a copycat of EP4, EP7 was fucking great.
Rogue one was so boring though. Sure it was a unique twist on the starwars franchise but it was Excuted poorly. All the characters were forgettable aside from the robot. And the first half drags on forever. TFW may have been less original but the pacing, and action was far superior.
Episode 7 was defineitly enjoyable but the unoriginal story made it a watch only once kind of movie while I can watch any of the original films whenever if it shows up on TV.
Like another death star really? How much money does the empire has if they can keep constructing these huge ass things.
They couldve atleast save it for down the road and make it much more fearsome. Like a dyson sphere(yes im still mad about HL3) on a huge star that could wipe out entire solar systems.

That's pretty much what Star Killer can do though
it sucks a sun up with a giant straw and then sprays it out
huh... it's almost like this saga of star wars is played out. When can we get out of rehash star wars and into something new?

Oh right, I kinda forgot.
The story is pretty forgettable, I remember more references and callback moments that was in the movie then actual movie plots.
oh for fuck SAKE why not Rian again aaa
ok to be fair expecting Rian to immediately go back into a super massive project was a bit optimistic and JJ is still better than Colin but still, got my fuckin hopes up
