Sony reported fiscal second-quarter earnings and revenue that beat forecasts thanks to a strong performance from its PlayStation gaming business, and said it expects its best profit since 1998.
The Japanese electronic giant reported the following numbers for the three months to September 30:
-Sales of 2.06 trillion Japanese yen ($18.2 billion) vs 1.86 trillion yen expected, according to Reuters data. This was also a 22.1 percent year-on-year rise.
-Operating profit of 204 billion yen vs 135.6 billion yen expected. This market a 346.4 percent rise.
Sony also raised its dividend in the second quarter to 12.50 Japanese yen from 10 Japanese yen.
The Japanese giant said it now expects operating income for the year ending March 31 to be 630 billion Japanese yen. If realized, this would be the highest ever profit for the company since its record-breaking year in 1998 when it earned 526 billion yen. During this period, Sony's first PlayStation console was proving very successful.
Sony's gaming and network services business saw operating revenue rise 35.4 percent year-on-year to 433.2 billion yen, with operating income hit 54.8 billion yen, marking a 188.3 percent rise.
PlayStation has been the crown jewel for Sony for a long time and the latest quarter was helped by increased game and hardware sales. Major game titles such as "FIFA 18" and "Unchartered: The Lost Legacy" were released during the quarter.
Worth noting that PS4 shipments surpassed 60+ million:
Notably, the PlayStation 4 shipped 4.2 million system during the second quarter. This brings total PlayStation 4 shipments worldwide to 67.5 million units. This is actually up over the second quarter of the previous fiscal year, when the PlayStation 4 only shipped 3.9 million units.
In the G&NS segment, sales increased significantly primarily due to the significant contribution of PS4 software sales including sales through the network," said the company in its consolidated report.
For the rest of the fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2018, Sony expects shipments of 19 million PlayStation 4 systems. That would bring the total userbase of the PS4 up to 79 million, and represents a 1 million system increase over the previous forecast for this year. It's worth noting that the PlayStation 4 shipped 20 million system in the previous fiscal year.
Earlier this year, the company said that it expected sales to slow down, but apparently that sales decline wasn't as bad as previously estimated.
Sony Computer Entertainment seems to be the only division of Sony that isn't a total dumpster fire lately. Lord knows Sony Pictures isn't doing well.

That and their mobile division, even though their phones are not that bad.

They're not marketed well, or at all, and they're suffering in a space where Samsung is eating old titans of the Android scene like HTC for breakfast.
There's still ridiculous issues that prevent me from ever touching a PlayStation, which include:
1. Not wanting to support mods
2. Not wanting to support cross-platform play
3. Forcing developers to say a game is ready to play when it's actually still installing stuff
4. Throttling the bandwidth of PS4s so that downloading stuff takes forever
5. Lack of quality control for online games
6. Forcing you to rebuy old games that you already have on other systems when Microsoft is pushing for backwards compatibility
With all of that, I can't help but feel like I'm getting a shit deal, here.

I wish SP would just fucking die already
I wish SP would just fucking die already
I think they'd rather fight to their stupid death than focus on anything worth being proud about.

Instead of dying trying to play a hero, though a foolish one, they're going to die face down in a pig pen with their pants down, after being trampled alive and bleeding out slowly
and i'm not even going to feel bad at this point.

Cameras.
Sony cameras are great, and are doing quite well.

Tbh they do support cross platform play with PC.
PS4 is the only reason Sony still exists right now.

Partially. In a game like Rocket League, Sony is the only reason why the cross platform is not fully implemented.

Don't forget the servere lack of local (!) co-op/multiplayer games. The only game I can play together with my gf is Minecraft. Even though I bought my ps4 expecting more games supporting it.
This is what happens when you secure all the best console exclusives. People care way more about games than hardware.
Tbh they do support cross platform play with PC.
And yet everyone else is supporting cross-platform play for everything else. Rocket League devs said "yeah, it's all set up, Sony just won't give the 'okay.'"
Which is kinda fucked. Microsoft went on record a few times and said "yeah we'd love to," and Sony hasn't made a peep, the only word from them is being "sony said no" from devs trying to establish it.

Some of their biggest games aren't even exclusive, they just secure deals for marketing from third parties or do pack-in bundles during the holidays.

I hope they change their mind

Sony is the only company that's even trying to make good "not fucking huge holy shit" smartphones
This is what happens when you secure all the best console exclusives. People care way more about games than hardware.
Also the fact that they didn't have much competition at the beginning of this generation with xbox's abysmal launch and the wii u being the flop it was, the only thing they had to do right is secure a bunch of good exclusives.
People also seem to underestimate how much casual titles like FIFA, Madden, NBA 2Kxx and even GTA i'd say, sell a console and if you don't cater to those titles you end up losing a huge portion of the market.
all dat spideyman money as well
PS4 isn't what's keeping SONY alive, their insurance business is.
That and their mobile division, even though their phones are not that bad.
They're great imo, and I only have medium range phones, with the X compact being the only high end of last year's mid to high range.
This thing's a beast.
Got a PS4 pro since they had quite the load of exclusives i wanted to play but to be honest the Xbox One X seems like the better deal now in case i was not caring about the exclusives and not a PC gamer.

Do you really want cross platform? Let's take a game like GTA 5... do you really want to mix the massive amount of mod menu using pricks on pc with legit players on ps4? Probably not. Backwards compatibility would be nice but doesn't anyone keep their old consoles and games? Or is it just new console is out all the old shit goes in the trash. Only real issue I have with the ps4 is that I have to spend a half hour updating it every time I use it. But I only use it like once a month.
Glad to see their sales increasing though.

Sony already does PC cross platform with certain games. What he should've said was console cross platform play.

The only issue big enough to deter a purchase is lack of backwards compatibility. The rest are minor issues imo.
I prefer Sony this generation too.
I even love my vita I just wish Sony hadn’t killed it off so early.

Backwards compatibility is nice in the sense that it often adds improvements like increased resolution and sometimes even performance. And even if it just plays the game straight, that's a huge perk for someone that is just getting a console for the first time or doesn't have the space to have a collection. If someone wants to go back and play a classic, there is no pre-req beyond owning the game.
Remember for at least some group of people, the PS4 and Xbox One are their first consoles.
Playing Rocket League on PC is an odd experience because you can end up matchmade with either PC and PS4 players or PC and Xbone players. They're working on cross-platform partying with PC and Xbox as well, but not PS4. I think a Psyonix dev once said in a reddit post that they have a switch that they can flip anytime to enable full three-way cross-platform play, but they can't flip it because Sony says no.

1. That is 99% up to the developer. Many games are starting to support mods.
2. Ageed, though Xbox is similar with that.
3. Xbox does that as well. Most PS4 games that I have will download the first few levels first, giving me an hour or so to play.
4. I haven't noticed throttling on mine, not noticeable at least.
5. Completely agree, Xbox is similar though.
6. Agree there 100%.
I own Xbox1 and PS4. Personally, i like my PS4 much more. The interface is much easier to use. It took me ages to disable auto startup, rest mode, etc on my XBOX1.
Rest mode was on for the first week. I would sit my controller on top, just to find it was burning hot with the xbox1 'off'
Auto update would wake me up at night. My Xbox is a Forza edition and makes a loud 'vroom' when it turns on.

Really yours make noise? My OG XB1 console is dead silent. I have no idea it even runs for auto updates. It more or less just works.
