The attention around Tesla’s solar products is mostly focused on its solar roof tiles, but those address only a new segment in the market – the new roof segment. Tesla is also trying to innovate for homeowners who don’t need a new roof, but who still want to generate their own solar energy.
This weekend, Tesla updated the ‘Energy’ section of its website to unveil new pictures – see above and below – of a new exclusive solar panel made by Panasonic. Electrek has also learned some details about this new product that will apparently shape the future of the company’s offering in the residential solar industry.
The new panels are part of Tesla’s deal with Panasonic at the ‘Gigafactory 2’ in Buffalo. They will be manufactured by Panasonic at Tesla’s factory for Tesla’s exclusive use. They don’t plan to make them available to third-party installers or individuals.
...
As for the modules themselves, we learned that they are 325-watt and Tesla claims that they “exceed industry standards for durability and lifespan”, but we don’t have the full specs yet.

We have like 8000 watts of electric heating in our house going on for probably 14 hours a day, I wonder how many panels we'd need to deal with that :v:
(not that my part of the world is much of a target audience, low amounts of daylight and all)

Dont forget about summer, we get 24 hours of sunlight everyday in the summer and pure darkness in the winter.

Somebody should set up a service that rents them out for half a year, loading them all onto a boat and shipping them to Australia in fall, then back to Europe in spring.
Doubt the energy saving would cover the energy required for the travel though, haha.

Simple: have the ships powered by the panels in transit

But why?

Yeah but y'all use almost entirely renewable energy already. Heat your home to your hearts content!
But why?
Probably because Tesla will consume them all themselves.
But why?
WE ARE NOT WORTHY

Almost forgot, whoops.

Surely Tesla only has X amount of need for them and production can exceed that, though?

Doubtful. Tesla will be selling them both for commercial and residential projects all over the world.

seems like geothermal might be up your alley instead.

solarcity is the largest solar panel installer in a lot of places, so its like ford only selling to ford dealers i guess
My parents would look at this design and feel disgust, they're into the old victorianesque architecture. Me? I look at this and all I feel is a desperate desire to one day plaster that shit all over my house.
I like how our ratings are back again so we can rate these threads with zings.

For those type of people the best option would be the solar roofs.

The solar roofs are a lot less conspicuous but they don't compare to the original tiling they try and mimic, so I'm pretty sure that'd be a no go as well.

Looks the same to me?

Solar roofs are a lot more expensive though and as far as I know don't generate the same amount of energy.

That was true for Dow and friends offering. Supposedly not the case for Tesla's. It should be cheaper than getting a new roof and putting panels on it, more expensive than putting panels on a perfectly good roof though obviously. It may even be cheaper than new regular roof of a similar style without solar.
Ultimately we will have to wait for final specs and pricing though.
I still want to see how tf do you run plumbing vents through the roof for the tesla tiles.
Will they make pieces that go around the pipe? It's the only feasible method I can think of.
Also do these low profile panels require a strengthened roof?
