Yesterday, Destiny 2 went live on PC, finally bringing Bungie’s fight for humanity to PC gamers – only with a silky-smooth, 60fps framerate. For the most part, it’s been a smooth launch, but there are numerous reports of people getting banned simple for having common PC software tools installed.
There are reports that many bits of software that induce overlays of any sort are causing player bans. That’s innocuous stuff like Discord, Fraps, Mumble – and even streaming apps like OBS and XSplit. Some of the bundled hardware monitoring software that ships with laptops, like MSI’s afterburner are also apparently triggering bans.
People are understandably livid, especially since this is Bungie's response:

I can understand the tech behind it, but it's just silly that they haven't tested this on people first.

EVGA/MSI monitoring and Discord? How the fuck does it even detect that when its so common?
Even ancient abandonware like fraps should be common sense to allow, Jesus

Voice Communications
“Who’s talking” and visual notification features, such as those provided by Discord or Mumble, are not compatible with Destiny 2. Notification features may still be provided through the third-party application.
The ironic thing is that if they were going for the angle of 'oh, we don't want to have people metagame' well then haha, you can still do that
[editline]25th October 2017[/editline]
the funny thing is that its basically impossible to just... know to not run any of these programs
What's intersting
Shadowplay and ReLIVE work fine
Their overlays would also be using code injection to show their menus/fpscounters
I can tell you nvidia and bungie have a business relationship over this game. Can't say anything about AMD, I only got this information from the AU community manger directly
If you wanted to play in fullscreen and stream online, you are reliant on hardware based display capture (capture cards), botched shadowplay/relive, and battle.net's facebook stream functions
What's incredible is that they are straight up banning for this
my friend is saying that they are going to get a whole lot of shit from Straya. Unsure if it would mean anything legal.
But I lmao :v:
Considering how easily bans are being handed out this is basically the same thing as selling someone a car, and then taking it away without refund because they adjusted the mirror to the left slightly
Punkbuster detecting itself and banning based on that was the worst possible anti-cheat ever... and this somehow ends up being worse than that

Wow.
I also got banned right on the login screen, at least I got refund.
And just to be clear I didn't have any overlays, only a few apps running in background all of which are official and with digital signature.

Since you're on Windows 10, do you happen to have game bar enabled on Windows 10 settings? Just curious.
Glad you got refund though.

What the fuck are you doing, Bungie
Honestly, it's amazing. Even Rockstar reverted the bans after their updated anti-cheat got triggered by stuff like fps counters and Discord overlay.
Someone should record a video of them doing a fresh install of Windows, installing only one of these programs (like Discord) and Destiny 2, and getting instantly banned in Destiny 2. And then send that video to Bungie with attached screenshots of all of their denying. :v:
It'd be really obtuse and annoying for someone to go through all that trouble, but it'd be pretty indisputable evidence than their denials are garbage.

holy shit if this wasn't only a theory
Is steam giving refunds to people who got banned instantly?
This is gonna be a disaster if they don't handle it right (basically unbanning everyone, perhaps with compensation to calm them and disabling whatever system is doing this untill fixed). Saying all bans are permanent isn't doing Bungie too well either.
Is steam giving refunds to people who got banned instantly?
It's through Battle.net, and IIRC they're giving refunds.

It's not on steam. Only on the blizzard store.

Oh fuck you Skyward.
The forum is full of threads about the bans and so is the reddit.

Really fucking bad first impression. Appearently it's designed to not be compatible with overlays for security reasons, (makes sense, there's some hacks that use overlays to be harder to detect) but most games that try and stop that, simply make the game refuse to start or crash if you're using an overlay, NOT hand out a ban for it. They also don't say you'll get banned for it. (They don't say you WON'T get banned, there's no mention of any bans I believe period)
Even worse, it's a blanket ban pretty much. Discord? OBS? Shadowplay? MSI Afterburner? Banned! At least either have A: A whitelist (poor choice) or B: a blacklist of some sort (better option). Try and use one, and just have an error message come up and refuse to launch, or crash the game entirely if you try and inject it while it's running. Giving bans ontop of it is just overkill as that type of system can be set off by accident very easily.
Bungie's like "We will not be overturning bans or discussing them as per the policy playbook." but I'm pretty sure internally they're looking into it. It'd absolutely RUIN their reputation, forever if they just rob people like this.

Would be funny if this was true

It's even advertised for people to capture gameplay with shadowplay on this article
In addition to using that tech, you'll be able to use GeForce Experience to optimize your beta game settings for the best possible experience, and capture and stream all of your gameplay with ShadowPlay and the Share overlay.

Daily Destiny Population
We've removed this chart because people are using it to spread a false narrative of the Destiny 2 player population. Daily Unique users is a misleading statistics to use as basis for the active population of the game, any game in that matter. Not everyone plays video games 24/7, besides maybe at launch. We hoped our article would've cleared this up a bit but it seems it hasn't. To halt people from making false narratives based on the numbers we provide we decided to stop showing them in this chart.
Nope, it's disabled.
I still wonder if they even tested their anti cheat on normal PCs (with various software installed on them).
That some overlay software didn't work is nothing new, happened in the Beta, lots of people were angry particular about OBS not working.
But it was a beta, they didn't ban people there.
This is just sad, not that I like Destiny 2 to begin with, I find it very bland and many people report it already got pretty boring after two weeks or so on console.
Now this false flag banning. :v:

I've been hearing they did issue bans in the beta, and those bans carried over to full version
Oh god, it's GTAV all over again.
I've been hearing they did issue bans in the beta, and those bans carried over to full version
I got banned during the beta for using my recording software (the second I showed the overlay, I got banned). The ban was lifted after 1 day. I doubt they carry over. Dumb that this is still an issue.
It's one thing to have a malfunctionning, too wide anti cheat nest. At least they're proactive about cheating.
It's another to be in denial of it and tell customers who paid their full priced game on launch and got banned for running the most popular appps today that it's their problem. God how out of touch can you be.
lmao you also get banned with using Xbox Gamebar, a build-in feature of Windows :v:
2017 is about to end but AAA devs always find a way to hit a new low.
Won't be surprised if they state about not rolling back these bans no matter what.
