Several Classic Maps Removed from Counter-Strike: GO| Vertigo, Aztec, Assault, and Militia
The Competitive Matchmaking map pool previously contained every map in CS:GO, making it difficult for new or recently updated maps to stand out among the crowd of available options and generating poor matches as a result. To address these problems, the least-played maps will no longer be featured in official Competitive Matchmaking. Over time, promising new or updated maps will enter the map pool, and less played maps will continue to be removed.
So they remove the most classic maps, and just gloss over the fact in their blog, and it looks like they didn't even just remove them from the pool, they removed the maps from the game altogether.
Got the source from ValveTime:

No news articles about it yet, but this is fucking big.
They're all really shit maps though.
It's not like you can't still download them off of the official CSGO workshop account either, if you really want to play them. There will still be servers hosting them too.
It isn't really worth packaging them with the game when they're shitty and outdated, as well as basically never being played other than for sandbox/afk boosting (running 10 accounts in VM's and queue sniping yourself on maps that nobody plays).

what did you just say about aztec and assault
I hope this means that they might be getting at least some basic upgrades. They were mostly CSS reskins, as in, almost identical brush geometry with different textures.
They were pretty lazy in the first place.

To be fair, Assault is a very painful map to play.
Assault is my favorite map in CS:GO and was the only map I enjoyed playing in competitive. I pretty much knew all the hiding and camping spots like the back of my hand, and was pretty much the only map I played in CS:GO. Hell, I didn't mind waiting 20 minutes in queue as long as it let me play on assault. And now they just remove it from the game all of a sudden? Way to kill any lasting interest I had in this cosmetic shitfest Valve.
But apparently I'm in the minority here so why should anyone care :v:

Assault is not only the single least balanced map anyone has ever created, but the visleafs are also straight up broken in CSGO, with some of the vents and stuff being see through from outside.
As for Aztec, there's a reason that shit got dropped from tournaments circa CS 1.5.

While I can understand them being taken out of the matchmaking pool this is still pretty bad because a lot of custom maps that use the textures, props and particles from these maps will be broken.

I know there are ways to pack these into map files but a lot of older custom maps that will never get updated by thier creators will probably be broken forever now.

Back in ye olden days, Beta 6 and 7 specifically, I played 24/7 Militia on the BeerForBreakfast servers. It was hosted in Texas, I was in Tennessee, Got a 200 ping on my 56k, then I got 3Mb DSL and was scoring 20ms. It was like having host advantage
Those were some great good times
I've always preferred the CSS versions anyway, especially Militia and Inferno. They were so colorful and alive, and stripped of all of that for GO. So much beige it felt like a 2008 shooter. Same goes for most official maps, it seems like it's only the fan maps with cool settings and design.

That's pretty easily fixed by just playing with mat_monitorgamma 1.6 and ~160% saturation.

There are compatibility versions put up on the workshop by Valve. You can just download them and it will fix it.
I don't like Aztec personally, but Assault is really sick. Sad they removed it, I could hardly ever get into a match for it though.

i don't really care about tournaments or esports. half the fun is good players winning despite a disadvantage. both maps rule.

that's probably a good thing though since css is the best version of the game

They're shit.
If you don't play the game this sounds like a big deal but it's really not. No one wants to play these maps, they are inferior to current maps gameplay and design wise, and they're taking up space for new maps to be played.
Like Train, Dust, and Nuke, they are probably getting re-worked and will be added back into the game when the updated versions are completed. And as other people have said, Valve puts maps on the workshop when they do this, iirc even old versions like old train or nuke for people.

Me and a few friends are into playing the awful maps for the sole reason of they being completely shit and out of the meta, it can be quite the funny experience.
Valve is taking away the fun again, why
They weren't great in CS:GO but removing content from a game is still fucking dumb even if you can just go download them
They're shit.
I think in 5 years Ive played Aztec and Assault once each in the many times Ive played the reserves group in casual, I don't even remember what assault looks like.
Keeping a map in the game is one thing but if it means that a valve official server empties out almost completely when they get chosen there must be a deeper reason aside from the look of the map.
I would be interested to see the statistics on maps being played and how often a map gets voted for in casual or played in competitive. They must have info like that right?
Haven't played cs in years but the layout of Assault is burned into my mind.
Vertigo was fun as fuck. I Still remember on CT side shooting people from who camped that window by the dumpster until they fixed it.
CS:GO is just CS:S with microtransactions and less content. It's garbage. Ignore it.
These maps being removed are proof positive of that.
Can't you just like load them through the workshop or whatever and keep playing with other people who has it?
I hope Italy and Office dont get removed.
it looks like they didn't even just remove them from the pool, they removed the maps from the game altogether.
Where exactly does it say this? Because everything I'm seeing specifically says Competitive Map Pool.
well if they're not popular, can be easily redownloaded through workshop and there's plenty of other new maps then I don't see the problem, it's better than just piling on content and making the games filesize all bloated like tf2

They weren't direct about it but if you launch the game you won't find them in casual or DM

A lot of people on the reddit part are reporting it, which it was linked by ValveTime so take from that what you will. Either way I hope they are bringing back other classic maps. Otherwise there is no excuse. Plus, from what I'm reading Dust1 is going as well.
It is true that they removed the map files. You can still get em on workshop.
I don't understand why'd you get upset about this. You can still get the maps. The only real negative here is that community maps that rely on assets from those maps (afaik only particle effects were removed) will now have errors in a few places.
Same thing happened to all the coop maps in operations except you can't get them anywhere anymore iirc (officially at least).

What less content are you talking about? Do you mean the CS:GO has workshop and CS:S does not? Which means CS:S has less content. Which it does.
