A pair of deep-cover Soviet spies masquerades as a typical DC couple whose children, neighbors, coworkers & friends are completely unaware of their activities. At home, they're the stereotypical parents of stereotypical kids; at work, they pose as travel agents; but at night, they weave a web of confidants, lovers, dupes, and historical figures from the Reagan-era Cold War. The startlingly realistic plot twists force the viewer to consider the real cost of an undeclared war, what it takes to protect one's beliefs, if it's worth it, and if it actually worked for either side.
Trivia
The premise of this series is partly based on the true story that broke in 2010 of a cell of Russian Sleeper agents who had been "hiding in plain sight" in the United States for decades. Several of them had had children, coworkers, friends, and neighbors who all had no idea that they were spies. These agents were ultimately returned to Russia in a trade for some Americans who were being held by Russia.

Joseph Weisberg created the show. Weisberg worked in the CIA's directorate of operations from 1990 to 1994. As a former agent, any script written by Weisberg must go in front of the CIA Publications Review Board.

Real-life Reagan staff member Oliver North, most infamous for his role in the Iran-Contra affair, is a fan of the show. He has even helped consult on the historical accuracy, in particular the Contras training camp arc in season 2 episodes "New Car" and "Martial Eagle."
If you're into thrillers, Cold war stuff, covert operations, espionage and social engineering (absolutely NOTHING like James Bond, it's more realistically portrayed), and a good feeling for how political tensions between USA and the USSR used to be back in the '80s, this is your show.
So far it's got 4 seasons out, and the general opinion is that it's a slow burn, but consistently good throughout, which I fully agree. It doesn't shy away from any controversial topics - the main characters are incredibly good at being deep-cover KGB spies in the US, and they don't have any qualms about neutralizing people (no matter who), for the good of the Motherland. Many times you'll find yourself rooting for the Soviets (as in, Philip and Elizabeth), instead of the FBI.
Pros
+ It's an 80's time capsule, everything from that era (events, objects, etc) is exquisitely created and treated, right up there with Mad Men (another show I adore).
+ The struggle between the FBI and the KGB can become incredibly tense at times, and it's captured perfectly.
+ Philip and Elizabeth are absolute badasses. Both have one goal in common, but Elizabeth tends to be the most strict and hardcore of the pair. If you want the definition of "female badass", look no further than Elizabeth "Nadezhda (Надеҗда)" Jennings. Jessica Jones ain't got SHIT on Elizabeth.
+ You'll get a good feel for how things were in the US (politically speaking), back in the early '80s.
Cons
- Can't find any. It's been a solid show, can't find any weak spots on it, all loose ends are neatly tied, every subplot is interesting and adds to the whole, and you really don't have to suspend your disbelief about anything.
You can watch it on Netflix and on Amazon Prime - Season 4 has just been added to Amazon Prime, IIRC.
Comment, Comrades!

Well... this is awkward. :/
It's a pretty good series, but I have some problems with it. It takes way too long to progress the main story, and nothing really big has happened yet. It's really taking its time. But I'm a sucker for cold war intrigue so it keeps me interested enough. Looking forward to the new season.
Love this show so much, can't wait for the next season!
Added a new poster to the OP. I fuggin' love these.

The new season currently holds a 94/100 on Metacritic, can't wait for the premiere tomorrow!

"The Americans - The new Breaking Bad"
http://www.thegreateverything.com/review-the-americans-the-new-breaking-bad/
Wait Season Four comes out now???
WOW, I didn't even know it had a date... neat, needed something to replace house of cards.
Holy shit that episode was fucking amazing from the very first minute to the last.
It's the best TV series right now on television, no debate about that.
Finally got around to watching it, what an awesome premiere!
Show has been underrated since it premiered. The last season was almost perfect. I hope it picks up traction with viewers this season.
They need to do what AMC did with Breaking Bad and put it on Netflix.
It would explode in popularity if it went on there.
Finally there's a thread about this show
Glanders (from Middle English glaundres or Old French glandres, both meaning glands) (Latin: malleus German: Rotz) (also known as "equinia", "farcy", and "malleus") is an infectious disease that occurs primarily in horses, mules, and donkeys. It can be contracted by other animals, such as dogs, cats, and goats. It is caused by infection with the bacterium Burkholderia mallei, usually by ingestion of contaminated feed or water. Signs of glanders include the formation of nodular lesions in the lungs and ulceration of the mucous membranes in the upper respiratory tract. The acute form results in coughing, fever, and the release of an infectious nasal discharge, followed by septicaemia and death within days. In the chronic form, nasal and subcutaneous nodules develop, eventually ulcerating. Death can occur within months, while survivors act as carriers.
They're not just a fictional couple, they're actually married to each other IRL.

True that, I didn't know that when I was first watching the show! Also, I did *not* know that Matthew Rhys is Welsh! Judging by his accent, I would have sworn the dude is 100% American.

It feels rather jarring hearing his natural accent :v:

I totally get why Keri fell for him... dat sweet accent

AFAIR they hooked up during the shooting of second season, which is pretty ironic seeing their characters overcoming their marital problems around the same time.
Best show on Television right now, pretty easily. Everything about is just perfect, the acting, the costumes, the music... especially the music. Just genius.

[sp]I keep thinking that he must be either a CIA mole who's playing the long game but has just hit jackpot with Paige, or a KGB operative lurking and keeping an eye on Philip and Elizabeth, while grooming Paige.[/sp]
Next episode is named after EPCOT. Wonder why.

I think this song was probably my favorite part of the Season 1 Finale. :dog:
[sp]I'm really glad Elizabeth actually folded the laundry while she was down there.[/sp]
Holy shit, that episode...
[sp]They were not lying when they said 'shortly'[/sp]
