Director John Carpenter loves the Sonic video game franchise
Sonic the Hedgehog has been a joke for years now, thanks to a string of terrible games that tarnished the Sega icon's legacy. The brilliance of Sonic Mania earlier this year offered some respite for fans, but the recent release of Sonic Forces marked a return to poor form.
The blue hedgehog's most ardent fans will defend his exploits no matter what, and now counted among their number is none other than legendary filmmaker John Carpenter: the man behind Halloween, Escape From New York and The Thing.
"I even like the one where he turns into a werewolf," he told FACT Magazine, referring to 2008's Xbox 360 and PS3 title Sonic Unleashed.
"Back in the early 90s, I got hooked on Sonic The Hedgehog for Sega Genesis [Mega Drive outside North America] and I just couldn't stop playing it... I loved the game. I loved everything about it," he explained.
"I especially loved the music. There was something about the whole sound and feel of the Sonic games and suddenly I'm so much younger and it's the '90s."
Carpenter explained how he originally bought the 1991 game for his son Cody but got hooked on it himself in spite of the game's difficulty. "It didn't have a memory card so I'd have to start over every time. Those games were HARD, man."
Of all the game's stages, one left an impression on the director. "The underwater level. Oh god," he said. "I'd die every time. And then have to start back. It was so frustrating, but there was something so intensely addicting about that."
Carpenter even played and completed Sonic Mania: a colourful, retro-style ode to the series' 16-bit heyday and a wonderful reinvention of its essence. "Oh hell yeah," he said when asked if he had beaten Mania. "It took a while, these things are hard to beat.
"I just keep wanting to play Sonic games - because they're fun. I hope they keep making them."
John Carpenter loves games in general, sometimes he tweets about what he's playing.

Doesn't he love Dead Space as well?
he loves dead space, yeah. and he helped work on FEAR 3 apparently. dudes a big gamer actually and seeing as he more or less doesnt direct anymore, he has plenty of time for his music and gaming. id love to see john carpenter helm a game however.
Yeah dude is a total synth nerd and I love it.
If John Carpenter directed a Sonic film, I'd see that shit day one. Regardless of quality, it wouldn't be a boring movie.
John Carpenter's such a cool old man
Yeah dude is a total synth nerd and I love it.
IIRC Alan Howarth did all of the patch programming and sound design for most of the big ones (Halloween, Big Trouble, etc) , leaving the composition to Carpenter. I think he's even gone on the record as saying that he's not as much of a gearhead as people think and most of his synth scores were the result of budgetary restictions that he decided to roll with on later productions.
John Carpenter is my hero.
I guess he gets a lot of his horror inspiration from Sonic06.

That's sad because Fear 3 was terrible

He wasn't involved with the story, just the cinematics, so make of that what you will.
He was in the game of his movie, The Thing so I think it's actually canon what happened in that game.

Oh I keep forgetting, I was thinking he had died.

I've heard that game was surprisingly good, hope it made him proud.

If Sonny Jim's words from gggmanlives are anything to go by, the game holds up surprisingly well on most subjects.
I've heard that game was surprisingly good, hope it made him proud.
it's okay, the gameplay is pretty underwhelming mid-2000's TPS stuff. it confirms MacReady's alive and not Thinged though so it's alright in my book
I find it outrageously cool that he likes Dead Space given the game's inspirations. That's almost like if Isaac Asimov liked I, Robot with Will Smith. Or if HP. Lovecraft loved Amnesia
Carpenter never fails to disappoint me.

It's more mediocre than good, really. Which is still better than 90% of game adaptions from movies.

man i was wondering why everyone had a mega drive as a kid but i'd never heard of a genesis.

I would love to see him write a video game script for a sonic game, even when in the video he gives the impression he would rather play with make a game
I wanna see his fanart.

I wanna see his OC, "John the Hedgehog"
I wanna see his fanart.
I wonder if he does them after his movies.
Sonic's Escape from LA.
Assault on Sonic's Precinct.
In the Sonic of Madness.
Suddenly I want a Sonic the Hedgehog/The Thing crossover.
