DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.
A McDonald’s employee in Daytona Beach, Florida, was attacked by three customers over a broken ice cream machine, according to police.
WKMG reported that three females, including two teens, were in the drive-thru of the restaurant Sunday night and wanted to order ice cream. The incident report said that the employee told the customers the ice cream machine was down for maintenance and could not be used, according to WKMG.
Seems like they didn't understandably have a great day.
McDonald's seriously needs to design better fucking ice cream machine. Ours has been down for weeks and we just got the shake side back up. This happens CONSTANTLY, and it pisses customers off. Who do they take their anger out on? The little guy at the counter.

Ice cream makers are notoriously fickle machines. My dad runs a chain of frozen yoghurt stores and of all the machines those fuckers are the ones that require the most maintenance, and they break down all the fucking time.

customers assaulting employees happened the other day too
the ice cream machine is always down, it was down every other day at our store when i worked. but its definitely not something to go and assault someone over, its shitty icecream at best :why:

You figure that hundreds of years of technological advances would let humanity master the art of making ice cream.
I guess not.
Is ice cream machine being broke that common in US?
I worked in Russian McD for 3 years, and ours broke only one time, when we were overloaded with ice team orders

It was Sunday "night" the machine was most likely down for the cleaning cycle, they do that here from the hours of like 2-3am till like 7.
Making soft serve ice cream is an amazingly feat of engineering actually, I totally understand when that shit is down, not a burger flipper's fault the machine that mixes and freezes very specific qualities of ingredients with the right amount of air at a specific temperature can't do that right now, and I have no expectation of them to be able to fix that either.
I've had co-workers abused and assaulted, physically threatened and intimidated due to problems we have at our McDonalds. Fucking grown adults abusing the 16 year old girl in order taking because we finished a certain deal and they're fucked up and don't believe it. I've had managers (who often step in asap when customers get rowdy) who've had drinks, food, and even entire fucking registers thrown at them by pissed off customers. Screaming and fucking yelling because you need a wait a fucking minute while we change some syrup, or make more product. I do not understand why these people think it is acceptable to fuck with us simply because we're maccas employees. I've even had customers (several times) smash the fucking glass at the front of the store because they can't get inside to order food (we close the front area at 11 and switch to drive through only). They really show what kind of fucking trash pieces of fucking shit they are. I fucking hate working fast food so fucking much. People treat you like you're less than human, like you're some fucking robot dedicated to your service. Even worse are the fucks that complain about how slow we are when there's fuckall staff and we're all busting our guts trying to get shit out and some self important fuckwit decides to pull me away from my work to bitch for a few minutes about how much time it fucking takes, not realizing that he's directly delaying me from getting his food. I pointed this out to a customer once as he was yelling at me and i guess he didn't like being made to look like a complete fucking braindead scumfuck moron infront of his friends, cause he thought he'd be cool and yell at a fucking maccas employee.
I don't want to be treated like royalty, i just want to be treated like i'm a fucking person.
Couldn't they just go to a DQ or something
Having worked in fast food for 7 bloody years, I can tell you that hungry people are exceptionally irrational and extremely prone to quick anger.
I've had a woman threaten to stab me because I didn't service her immediately when she walked up to the counter - the reason I didn't was because I was already servicing another customer clearly up there to talk to me. Some people are just insane, I hope they catch these women.
When I worked at KFC I had some methed up guy threaten to punch my face in because me and my coworker were having a joke about one of our shitty managers, which he took as us laughing at him.
Then another guy loudly called me (while laughing) a fucking idiot to all the customers behind him during lunch peak because I accidentally forgot to upsize his chips or something similar.
Working fast food is the absolute worst. Don't do it if you can. There's a lot better jobs our there even if you're desperate. The mental anguish isn't worth it.

this is such a problem, especially in some of the shittier suburbs and in the city. i reckon they need to hire a security guard to put cunts in their place. (some stores actually do have security guards at night just because of the amount of robberies and shit they are involved in)
[editline]29th June 2017[/editline]
i dont understand how anyone who has held a job dealing with customers or clients can berate someone just trying to do their job, because you have encountered cunts like this before, it doesn't feel great.

On that note, I had the misfortune of accidentally choosing an airBnB in what appeared to be a rough neighborhood and the fast food joint had like this massive plexiglass like wall between me and the servers. I got my stuff through a small little slot like some sort of criminal. :frown:
Shit's actually scary as fuck if you're not used to it.
Couldn't they just go to a DQ or something
If the person in question was actually a reasonable individual (which is a rarity anymore these days), then yes. Otherwise, you get shitheads that either throw a tantrum until they get what they want and/or something to compensate for what they aren't able to have, storm out of the place and come back 20 minutes later before causing a scene with someone else by their side, or pull the same shit like the ones mentioned in the OP.
The golden rule for working in retail or fast food from the customer's perspective usually seems to be "if they don't have it or need to make more, it's clearly this person's fault" in most cases, even when it clearly isn't.
wait i got a better idea, every store gets a luchador and if any customers have complaints they have to face them in the ring.
Worked at McDonalds for 6 or 7 months last year and just walked in one day and quit due to how on edge the job made me.
Fuck working fast food, there's a reason why there is such a high turnover rate.
Odd, I've not once come across a broken ice cream machine in Mc's, and i used to eat there from time to time

I can back this up, I've worked in a few different actual restraunts and cafes but my first fast food job was the actual worst, it's kinda shocking how common it was to have people just flat out quit at the end of middle of their shifts and the manager would just continue on like it happens every day

I went to a McDonalds in Seattle, and they had a bouncer. His entire job was kicking people out if they hadn't ordered food in the last 30 minutes, presumably to stop homeless people from sticking around.

Experiences like yours are why I always, always treat fast food workers and the like with respect
Jobs shitty enough without pieces of shit ruining your day
I feel pretty lucky in the 2 years I worked at Burger King I was exclusively in the kitchen and wasn't even trained on the till. I never had to deal with angry customers directly. We did wear headsets so when people came through the drive through we could start getting their food ready as they were ordering it and I remember one time we had someone come through and order a Big Mac and get angry when we said we don't serve those.
I was a shift manager at a Pizza Hut and some guy came in demanding free food. When he started acting up I told him there's the door.
He threatened to bash my head into same door. Like wtf lol. He wanted free food and was angry we weren't making it for him
Hell we had old food we'd give to homeless, so I offered that, but he wanted fresh.
I guess there has a to be a boxing dummy at every restaurant from now on.
I've never worked in customer service myself, but I've said this before in a similar thread and I think it bears repeating: treat the person serving you with respect and kindness, even if it seems that they aren't doing the same. Fast food workers are people too, and just like you they have off days. Maybe they dropped their phone and cracked their screen that morning. Maybe their mom just got hospitalised and they still have to work to pay the bills. Maybe they got a horrible result for their finals. Maybe they're just at the end of a 8 hour shift, having had to deal with assholes all day long. The fact is most people aren't incorrigible grouches, they usually have a reason to be cranky.
On many occasions I've walked up to the counter with a grumpy looking cashier at the register, but the simple act of saying hi, giving them a smile, and thanking them after the exchange entirely changes their demeanour. It's not even for their sake, because 99% of the time doing that makes them want to help you. And for me, I'm happy that I've managed to make their day just that little bit better.

I just recently quit my job as a cook, and one time my boss, the store owner walked out on us and quit in the middle of the day :v:
This type of behavior does not surprise me in the slightest. As some one who has worked at a Mcdonalds for over three years I feel that I can confidently say I have seen, and heard it all.
I know my experience at McDonalds does not reflect all fast food businesses, nor all McDonalds. My particular store however was an absolute shit show, and leaving it behind for something greater was the best feeling I had in a very long time.
For starters machinery breaking down was a norm, and repairs could take as long as months because out GM (General Manager) was incredibly cheap to the point where things felt they never got done unless the owner of the store (his boss) was showing up for a "surprise" visit.
This resulted in countless pissed off customers. During my time at McDonalds I worked my way up to shift manager, so more often than not I was the one who had to answer to these angry customers, and it was sickening how irrational people can be over the most petty of things. It did not help that along with my GM being very cheap. He never hesitated to cut corners.
I used to work the graveyard shift. A shift that by law requires a minimum of four employees, including a manager (myself). Instead every single night it would just be me and one other employee. We were never able to go on a break. There were countless nights were neither myself nor my co-worker were able to take a require 30 minute break. If we did the other guy would be left alone to basically run our 24 hour store by them self.
There were nights were I had to put cones in front of our two lane drive thru just so we could clean the stores equipment on time, and all the other tasks our GM required.
Going back to the ice cream machine, it was never cleaned, period. The only time it ever came close to being cleaned was when it would break down (probably from never being maintained), and one of the department managers would have to disable it, and try to put it back together even though I'm very certain he had no idea what he was doing. This was the case for a lot of the heavy machinery. The building was full of potential law suits, and health hazards.
The customers did not make the job any better. I would constantly have to deal with this old man who always wore a camouflage MAGA hat coming in our store with old cups to get free soda, and then have the nerve to complain to me if the ice dispenser was not working.
There was also a time when we were serving free coffee, and these two customers asked if the coffee was fresh. I told them yes, and they threatened me that they will come back if its not.... It's free! If you're not happy with it by all means come back for more! How can you complain about free?!
How can I forget the time this tall white guy came into my store shirtless brandishing his swastika tattoos, and asked me in front of my co-workers to make his McFluree because I was the only white employee behind the counter.
There have been a couple of times where I ran into people fucking in the bathroom.
I have also found a stingray inside one of our toilets. I don't know how, or why.
The list goes on and on.
At the end of it all I was a shift manager/college student in 2017 making $11.50.
I do not regret working at Mcdonalds. I have learned valuable skills, and gained wisdom which has gotten me to where I am today. I can't stress enough however that you shouldn't spend more than a year at a place like this. It's a dead end job that should be used as nothing more than a stepping stone for something bigger.
I never really got anything as bad as the stuff I'm hearing in this thread when I worked at a Starbucks (a drive thru location, not a cafe), but I can definitely attest to having to deal with some rowdy customers in the just short of 3 years I worked there.
Of course, we get the customers who were treated special at other Starbucks (usually getting things that were against guidelines like certain foods that can't be warmed up or drinks served below safe temp), and when we told them we couldn't do that, they'd throw out the whole "Well, I got it like this at the other Starbucks I go to!"
My favorites are the ones who would come in thru the drive thru in the mornings despite seeing a massive line (my location was one of the busiest in its district) and complain about how they're probably going to be late to work. In my mind, I'm just thinking "If you're worried about being late for work, then why join in a massive wait line at Starbucks?"
One really notable experience I had was some asshole that would come through almost every day, and as we were staging his drinks to get ready to hand out to him, he'd just reach in through the window, take them, and drive off. I was told by my manager to tell him next time not to do that. I did so, he got all pissy, threatened to complain to said manager, came in the store, rose a whole stink and asked for me to be fired. He never came back after that whole ordeal.
Oh yeah, and mornings are hell like you'd imagine. We were right by 2 private schools, a hospital, and many businesses, so every morning you'd get some person calling in an order of 24 different drinks with shitloads of food, while another person calls in and wants like 3 travellers (portable full batches) of coffee while you're having to deal with a large line both in the store and in the drive thru. Shit was intense.
The worst periods for me were during mid shifts though, because we had much less partners on the floor, but still had to deal with a solid 2 hours of private school kids getting out of school and people heading home from work. Mornings were at least somewhat manageable due to having like 10 partners on the floor instead of only 3 or 4.
A few weeks ago at McDonalds I was at the drive thru picking up my order when some 20ish year old woman walked up to the drive thru and angrilly pounded on the window because "the fucker didn't give me a straw". The guy working the drive thru was super friendly and it was a simple mistake but she treated him like trash. Guy double checked and asked me if I got a straw after he handed me my food which was funny.
My friend worked the drive thru at a McDonalds on I-95. He worked mornings so would have to deal with business types in suits/dresses acting like total assholes because the order wasn't perfect. One guy said their coffee sucked after drinking it and lobbed it at my friend. Steaming hot coffee would have scalded him if my friend didn't step to the side of the window. He eventually quit because (at the time) $8.75 an hour was not worth the trouble, and according to him his manager was racist to white and black employees.
These are people with fancy cars and jobs acting like the street trash in the examples above. Doesn't matter how much you make or how good their life is, what their race/gender is, or how old they are, people are assholes. Customer service employees are the most underpaid and overworked here, and you see the absolute worst of humanity doing these jobs.
