• A small Minnesota town is about to get the nation’s first public Satanic Temple monument
Veterans Memorial Park in tiny Belle Plaine, Minn., is packed with remembrances for the town’s men and women in uniform. Soon, it will get one more: A solemn black cube holding an upturned helmet, its sides adorned with upside-down pentagrams. The Satanic Temple announced Friday that it had received approval to install the monument, which is in production. Within a couple of months, it is expected to take its place alongside a flag-lined walkway, a marble plaque and a retired UH-1H Iroquois “Huey” helicopter positioned as if it is hovering above the ground. The approval of the monument brings a new twist to a long-running battle that began last summer, when someone put up a metal silhouette of an infantryman kneeling before a cross. A resident objected, calling it a religious symbol that violates the principle of the separation of church and state.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/a-small-minnesota-town-is-about-to-get-the-nations-first-public-satanic-temple-monument/2017/05/05/b13b75f0-31bf-11e7-9534-00e4656c22aa_story.html?tid=sm_fb&utm_term=.4c314f64dad7
That monument is awful, looks like no effort has been put into it. They could have mirrored the kneeling cross one and just had the soldier scratching a pentagram into his helmet or something. Would have been pretty great seeing them next to each other.
Pretty typical for Minnesota. The state is comprised of almost-Canadians, and complete edgelords. No imbetween.

Are they going for the sacrificial altar vibe, because the upturned helmet makes it look like they killed a veteran as an offering
Pretty typical for Minnesota. The state is comprised of almost-Canadians, and complete edgelords. No imbetween.
What else do you expect from a state that's only seasons are winter and road construction?
Look's like shit, but it's a victory for religious diversity!
Pretty typical for Minnesota. The state is comprised of almost-Canadians, and complete edgelords. I actually really like the simplicity of it
Are they going for the sacrificial altar vibe, because the upturned helmet makes it look like they killed a veteran as an offering
Maybe the soldier died defending the principle of being able to freely express an idea such as Satanism. This statue makes me feel peaceful. Hail Satan!
Pretty typical for Minnesota. The state is comprised of almost-Canadians, and complete edgelords. No imbetween.

The flare-up in this town about 45 miles southwest of Minneapolis comes as the country is mired in a heated battle over religious freedom and the rights of people of faith, particularly conservative Christians, to opt out of activities that support same-sex marriage, abortion or birth control. On Thursday, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at expanding religious protections that, among other things, soften enforcement of the Johnson Amendment, which bars tax-exempt houses of worship from engaging in political speech. But as the Satanic Temple has tried to demonstrate, expanding religious liberties can have unintended consequences. Because the Constitution bars the establishment of a national religion, it requires that the same protections be extended to people of all faiths, including those who profess no faith and those who practice faiths with disturbing connotations such as satanism. Greaves said that his organization is now considering applying for the same tax-exempt status that churches and synagogues enjoy. It previously avoided doing so to freely engage in politics. But with Trump’s executive order, he said, “there’s absolutely no advantage to not be tax-exempt. A lot more organizations should apply and put it to the test.” He said that his organization does not worship the devil. Rather, he said, it is a “nontheistic religious organization” devoted to art, free speech and individuality, whose values “are no less deeply held” than those professing a belief in God. In its application to the city, the organization described the monument as a “black steel cube with embossed inverted pentagrams with inlaid gold on four sides. An inverted helmet rests on the top of the cube. A plaque on one side of the cube reads: ‘In honor of Belle Plaine veterans who fought to defend the United States and its Constitution’.”
it's a political statement, not a religious one
Sounds like both. And in the U.S., they often are intertwined.
Not so much so in Minnesota, hence why the city government didn't bother fighting it.
This is your daily reminder that the Satanic Temple doesn't worship or believe Satan exists.
This is your daily reminder that the Satanic Temple doesn't worship or believe Satan exists.
thats what we want you to think

But with Trump’s executive order, he said, “there’s absolutely no advantage to not be tax-exempt. A lot more organizations should apply and put it to the test.”
it's a political statement, not a religious one
Joke is on them, the executive order doesn't give religious institutes free reign to make political remarks all they want, it only asks the IRS to not investigate or punish as hard as they normally would. I'm sure as hell (heh) that a conservative town in Minnesota in Trump's America is going to get investigated by the IRS for their political activism if they get the tax-exemption status.
This just seems disrespectful to me.
To me, that monument looks like something straight out of Quake. I think it looks neat, but just because some may think it looks tacky or is associated with satanism, doesn't mean it shouldn't be allowed to be placed in public. I'd welcome statues and monuments from alt religions not only because free speech/expression, but because having christian monuments littered everywhere of the same/similar things gets to be an eyesore after awhile.
Trump has finally allowed the religiously oppressed have a voice, I'm sure this is what he intended when with MAGA

It looks like a Quake powerup.
This just seems disrespectful to me.
Disrespectful to who?
it's a political statement, not a religious one
Where'd I say it wasn't a political one? Modern Satanists are just edgelords that push religious freedom laws to try and make an over exaggerated political statement. They're immensely grumpy but nice at the same time, theres no positivity in their lives but they're always happy for you. Truly a strange breed of people.
Do you have a moment to hear about our Lord and Damnator, Satan?
All Satanists are edgelords like all Christians are mentally retarded. See the generalizations? Dumb. Don't do this kids!
All Satanists are edgelords like all Christians are mentally retarded. See the generalizations? Dumb. Don't do this kids!
Considering that the vast majority of Satanists are troubled 8th graders or people trying to reinvent the religion by doing stuff like this, it kind of points to them all being edgelords. The whole point of the new Satanic movement is to piss off Christians who don't want to take the time to look into what their new movement stands for. The whole religion is based on being edgy dood.
That monument is awful, looks like no effort has been put into it.
It's a Satanic temple, what did you expect?
Can you back up any of these vapid, baseless opinions of yours please with sources of some kind
The OP is a good source, I would link it but I actually got a cut from all the edge. The Satanic Church website is another good source for what the modern Satanist movement stands for. The fact they didn't form a new religion, and instead reinvented a whole religion dedicated to pissing off Christians in the 60's, kind of adds validity to my claim. Can you really prove me wrong at all?
Small town Minnesota is so fucking weird

Satanism is simple, do what you want, do it with style, understand the consequences of your actions and keep parasites out of your body and social life. Even theistic satanist nutters follow those principles IIRC. The whole religion is based on being edgy dood.
How is cutting a cake in slices with angles that are perfect natural numbers edgy? How is having nonbinding romantic relationships with other people, only staying together as long as the relationship is mutually beneficial, how is that edgy? How is putting a naked woman on an altar and playing chill music under candlelight and saying cool lines edgy? Replace the altar with a couch, bed or table and you got literally everything on the front page of pornhub. Not even pissing off christians is edgy anymore, critique of religion, regardless of what religion it is, is necessary. I don't understand people like you. I appreciate that this is done for the few satanist war vets out there.
