A moderately strong earthquake shook the Indonesian island of Java and the country's capital Jakarta on Tuesday. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
According to the US Geological Survey, the 6.0 magnitude quake was centered offshore western Java at a depth of about 43 kilometres (27 miles). The epicentre was about 153 kilometres (95 miles) southwest of Jakarta.
According to Indonesia's Department of Meteorology, Climate and Geophysics, the quake didn't have the potential to generate a tsunami and no warning was issued.
i actually felt the tremor this time, the strongest i've ever experienced so far
living in an apartment makes it scarier
Is there like some common tectonic plate or something that did this with hours of each other in Alaska and Java?
Was playing insurgency with my friend when it happened, he stopped playing mid combat, we wondered why, then he casually comes back and says "just an earthquake, no biggie".
He really doesn't give a fuck. :v:

Yeah, when you live in an area where quakes aren't that unusual it just becomes something normal. I've had that same situation in the past where we had a 5-6.0 while I was chatting with some friends online and gave them the same reaction.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the Pacific plate runs through Indonesia and Alaska of course

The pacific plate (a big chunk of the earth's crust) is butting up against the plates surrounding it, especially those of north america and SE asia. The pressure builds up where the plates are in contact, and eventually that stress is relieved when the plates slip past one another or crumple up. In a nutshell, that slippage generates earthquakes and tsunamis.
A 6.0 is a relatively low energy event. But not all countries along the perimeter of the pacific have access to adequate anti-earthquake/tsunami infrastructure, building design, etc. An earthquake that would be a minor footnote in some places could generate a tsunami that would be disastrous in others. In addition, the whole SE asian region is sadly in great danger of future earthquakes, as it is a location where lots of plates are colliding with one another. It's also the reason there are so many volcanoes there.
from bandung, Indonesia here, too bad didn't feel anything
