• Nigel the Bird Found Dead Next to the Concrete Partner He Tried to Woo For Years
Twenty years ago, conservationists in New Zealand placed 80 fake gannet birds on Mana Island in an attempt to attract some real-life gannets. But only one bird finally showed up in 2015. That bird, which locals named Nigel, spent years in a futile effort to woo a mate who was made of concrete. But sadly, Nigel has been found dead next to his stone cold partner. Conservationists were incredibly excited when Nigel arrived on the island in 2015, the first gannet to make Mana its home in 40 years. But Nigel’s story quickly turned depressing when it became clear that not only was Nigel tragically alone, but that he was trying to woo one of the concrete birds.
Source https://gizmodo.com/nigel-the-bird-found-dead-next-to-the-concrete-partner-1822655398
man this is just grape-kun all over again
To Nigel You stayed awhile on Mana Island, Attracted by your concrete mates You built a nest, you did your best But only Norman dropped on by. We weeded, we painted, we sprayed guano around. We hoped you’d find the real thing. Three newbies arrived, a Christmas surprise, But suddenly you are gone. RIP ‘no mates’ Nigel from the Mana Island Facebook page.
man this is just grape-kun all over again
2d bird wife > 3d bird wife
Nigel, perhaps the loneliest bird on Earth, even built a nest from seaweed, mud, and twigs for his concrete love. But his affection was never reciprocated, no matter how hard he tried. The relationship, and all his prattling, was doomed to remain one-sided to his death
feminism is a plague on society
Make a painted stone statue of this bird.
Make a painted stone statue of this bird.
Why not just make a duplicate of the statue and put it next to the first? I mean even Grape got to be with his cut out when he went.
I'm just curious as to why they didn't attempt to catch him at some point, especially for as long as a year or more. You'd think they'd keep him in captivity while waiting for more birds to arrive and breed with. I feel bad for the little guy, he clearly felt the need to stay there with a piece of concrete.
This is just a metaphor for all the nerds with anime pillows
Make a painted stone statue of this bird.
yes, and then make a painted stone statue of the next bird that tries to woo the new stone statue, and then make another one, and the cycle will never end
yes, and then make a painted stone statue of the next bird that tries to woo the new stone statue, and then make another one, and the cycle will never end
What if that's what the 80 statues are and those conservationists have been lying to us all along
