Chicago is considering Elon Musk’s tunnel boring company for a high-speed rail under the city
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel revealed today that he has been talking with Musk about partnering with the Boring Company for a high-speed rail under the city.
...
Emanuel said that they sent a team to look at what they are doing:
“The other day, because of contact I’ve had with Elon Musk and his operation for a kind of a tunnel project rather than an existing rail project to be taken over, I sent a team out to look at his tunnel digger as part of this project. He has expressed an interest in what Chicago’s doing. And I think that it would be a tremendous investment and job creator, an economic engine for the city that will pay dividends for decades ahead. They have shown interest, and now I’ve asked them to come to the city of Chicago, after I sent my team out to California, Southern California to explore it and explore their interest. They are very interested, and we’re going to have them now out to the city to explore further what we are doing and planning, and too see if the tunnel approach is an alternative to the ones we’ve been discussing.”
Musk is really boring :buckteeth:
As a person who lives just outside Chicago, THANK FUCK. Holy shit, if you want to go to the city currently, you have to suffer a parking lot of traffic no matter what. If this tunnel system comes to fruition, it would basically solve Chicago's traffic ( I would hope anyway).
as someone currently riding the metra 50 miles each way to and from union station daily and is considering buying a house in the not too distant future, please for the love of god get a plan in motion so I know where I have to move to be close to the a station

Hope you don't need to make a decision for at least 5 years...

This rail is for airport travel fyi. It'll be to get people to and from O'Hare to downtown and not for us. I doubt they're looking to replace the Metra or CTA with this.
This train is a useless waste of money in the original plan. If the cost is low enough, cool, then it could be justified for the low ridership it would probably have (Assuming ticket prices are the expected $20something+). Otherwise, we've already got the blue line for this and the time saving isn't that great.

o'hare's on my main itinerary (god if it just connects with o'hare transfer I'd be set), BUT I'd assume given the nature of high speed transit, there'd also be extended stations way out of the area. I'd gladly trade 50 miles of commute for 100 or more at roughly the same travel time if it meant I could get a house nowhere near cook county, or even in illinois. could comfortably afford a mansion just over the wisconsin border from my current place for the same cost as a 1 bedroom apartment near my work
[editline]e[/editline]
the most reasonable complaint of how costly it'll be is how fast will local politicians embezzle the shit out of it while extending its construction 15-20 years
I really don't like the idea of a private "rich people only" subway/highway system under cities though. like if we spend public money on it then it should be for a rail system that everybody can use, the whole underground highway monorail thing is just not what people need

You wont need to live near a station by the time Elon Musk unveils his new self piloting personal drones.
I think its too aheas of its time, simply too expensive to build and operate when you have more budget options.

Why would it be a rich people only thing?
