A wall has fallen onto an Indian wedding party during a storm, killing at least 24 people including four children and injuring many more, police said on Thursday.
The concrete wall fell on guests who were sheltering from heavy rain in a tin shack on Wednesday night, police superintendent Anil Tank said.
He said 26 people were injured, 15 of them seriously.
...
District magistrate Narendra Kumar Gupta said: “We have registered a case and taken one of the managers of the banquet hall into custody.”
...
Gupta also announced compensation of 50,000 rupees ($775) for the family of each person killed.
...
A massive influx of people to cities in search of jobs and a shortage of low-cost housing has fuelled the construction of illegal buildings across the country, often with sub-standard material.

Was going to title this thread "[india] wedding tragedy kills 24" but didn't want to get banned. this is a real fucking tragedy Thats like whole families wiped out at a wedding
Not at all surprised. When the floods hit us a couple years ago, entire apartment blocks were leveled to the ground because they weren't constructed to withstand such disasters. It takes often far less, like this storm, to destroy or badly damage such substandard buildings as well.
The only sufferers here are unfortunates like this who die as a result of shoddy work, and when the fucks who cut corners are actually arrested, it's always too little too late.
Jesus fucking Christ... :(
775$ for the death of each person.. Wow..
775$ for the death of each person.. Wow..
Imagine a price of a little under a thousand dollars being put on your child's life, awful that stuff like this happens
Reminds me of that Israeli banquet hall accident back in the late '90s - early '00s, the one where the second floor collapsed in the middle of a dance.
775$ for the death of each person.. Wow..
The kicker is that even for such a paltry amount, it still won't ever get into the hands of recipients, because it's either not been allocated for or gobbled up by rampant corruption.
There are people still fighting for such handouts from 20 years ago, ffs.
