Google revamps image search to protect Getty Images' intellectual property; removes "view images"
Getty Images filed a complaint against Google before the European Commission in April 2016 for allegedly making available high-resolution versions of copyrighted photos via its image search service. Nearly two years later, the complaint has prompted the search giant to introduce changes to Google Images intended to help protect the intellectual property of photographers.
As per an agreement between Google and Getty Images, the search giant will reportedly ditch the 'View Image' button, which will make it more difficult to obtain high-resolution versions of images for users. Additionally, the company will also display licensing information more prominently in its image search results.
this article is a few days old but the changes seem to be rolling out already; the view images button is gone for me. this is fucking stupid.
View Image is the single most useful button in google image search, go fuck yourself, google.
how did they screw up so that google image search could access their high res versions?
I can't wait for pinterest to fuck image search up harder since it redirects you to people's entire pin walls when the image you wanted was one of the hundreds to thousands cached within it
Wow so bing does something google won’t?
Time to switch to DuckDuckGo.
I hope someone will make a chrome/firefox extension to add it back somehow.

'to view this image and others, log in with your google+images account!'

This. It seems like it'd be a security flaw on the photographer's end that a public search engine could access their copyrighted material
but AFAIK all those sites give Google Images the watermarked image, and if you click the View Image button, it gives the one with watermarks...? What am I missing out?
Can you get the high res pictures by right clicking them when you click them in google images and hitting view image?
Can you get the high res pictures by right clicking them when you click them in google images and hitting view image?
not if google images only loads a low-resolution thumbnail
Get ready to be dragged into horrible websites filled with sludgy-ass pop ups becasue you forgot to hit "open image in new tab". This is moronic.
here i thought it's only for Getty Images through some sophisticated algorithm that may disable the "View Image" button, but no, it's worse
it's for all images
Ayup. Fuck off, Google.
Maybe if we cause a big enough ruckus they'll add it back.
How the ever-loving fuck is this Google's problem? It's the hosts' own damn fault they're leaving the high-resolution images un-gated from search engine indexing.
So, which search engine should we switch to for images, now?

bing's image search is the best thing about it, arguably better than google's (or i guess objectively now)
yeah to be fair Getty Images have been having a rough time recently, nice to see this show of good faith from friendly local tech company Google
I can't wait for pinterest to fuck image search up harder since it redirects you to people's entire pin walls when the image you wanted was one of the hundreds to thousands cached within it
what is the POINT of Pinterest anyway? all it does for me is ruin my image searches.
rip google image search
Oh, fuck you Google. What the fuck is the point of Image Search if you're going to try and stop us from linking the images we find?

it's tumblr for soccer moms with a passing interest in interior decorating
Er, you can still click the image, right click the completely loaded image and select "view image". Even then, someone's probably gonna make an addon that puts the button back.
Like, if I can just do this then this barely changes anything.

I tested it with multiple searches, so unlesss I'm missing something, is this really as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be?

I'm pretty sure that's all view image does anyway. Its not really a big issue and does essentially nothing to fix the issue, which is hilarious.
This is the worst timeline

Except you're going to open a low-resolution thumbnail that Google stores, not the original 2789 × 1980 image hosted on the website.
EDIT: Apparently, that happens only on some images, but not on others. It gave me a base64 encoded thumbnail on one domain, but the full image on Wikipedia.
I've been using the Greasemonkey (and their forks) script that automatically views an image or link from Google when you open it in a new tab (I have one of my mouse thumb buttons set to this so it's easy and quick) for years. Having to click twice (once on the image then again on View) when I'm doing image collecting is such an unnecessary waste of time.
Just tried it and it still works.
Frustrating isn't even the word for this lmao. As someone who relies on Google images to quickly get high resolution photos of game covers this is such a tone deaf decision.

You have to wait for the image to fully load. Once the image is fully loaded it'll swap the lo-res cached version for the full res version. There'll be a little loading bar right on the bottom of the image and the image will look lo-res while it's loading.
I work there and think this is dumb.

View Images didn't always work even when the button was there so its not much different. In those cases I would just end up going to the page the image was hosted on or the link was broken, all together.
