• PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds EXEC 'Contemplating Action' Over Similar Fortnite Battle Royale Mode
Bluehole, the development studio behind PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, has said it is "concerned" by how similar Fortnite's recently announced Battle Royale mode is to its game, and is contemplating "further action". In a press release, Bluehole vice president Chang Han Kim explained the connection between his company and Fortnite's developer, Epic, as well as his issue with the extremely similar mode: “We’ve had an ongoing relationship with Epic Games throughout PUBG’s development as they are the creators of UE4, the engine we licensed for the game. After listening to the growing feedback from our community and reviewing the gameplay for ourselves, we are concerned that Fortnite may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known. “We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right. “The PUBG community has and continues to provide evidence of the many similarities as we contemplate further action.” The press release goes on to cite Fortnite's "User Interface (UI), gameplay and structural replication in the battle royale mode" as its causes for concern.
IGN (Ignore the IGN title, clickbait bullshit, its not the devs, its the Bluehole execs who have a problem, Brendan doesn't give a fuck)
Yeah because PUGB invented Battle Royale. Maybe they should also go after the hunger games, or arma for that matter
Yeah uh sorry, you don't own Battle Royale. If you think you do, you'd best prepare to take on the likes of Take Two and every other developer out there who's added a similar mode.
From the looks of things Fortnite's mode is just an all around better looking and playing game than PUBG ever can be. Checked out a few game play videos and it doesn't look like a glitchy, hacky, shitty mess of vomit thrown onto the Arma 3 engine. This just makes things worse because it's actually on UE4 and this entire time I thought it was on the Arma 3 engine. Not that Arma 3 is bad but we all know how it's engine works with things that it was never designed for. So in other words...on an engine that should be relatively easy to develop for that can be used for a wide variety of games in completely different genres (as evidenced by the number of games out there using UE4) the devs of pubg have failed immeasurably to make it work...somewhat well. Pubg is far from a polished product and it's still early access. Fortnite's mode looks to me like it's been completed...also on the same exact engine. I guess what I'm trying to say here is it seems they're worried about an actually finished product making their game look not so hot. Considering how much money the pubg devs have made after selling like 1000 trillion copies of their unfinished game I'm surprised it still isn't finished yet or at least have usable drivable vehicles that don't feel like the Mako in the first Mass Effect. Just seems to me like what an open market is for. "Considering action" is ridiculous. The consumers will be the ones to decide what stays and what goes. Not the devs for being insecure childish pricks.

I actually rather enjoy Pubg but they can fuck right off with this baloney.
Made by...the massive triple-A company that created and developed the engine.
Yes. So it's an all around better game, probably. That's not Epic Games fault and it's not the pubg dev's place to be upset about it. Reward competence, not incompetence.
You know I think I played a battle royal in Minecraft years before PUBG was a thing
Why is the creator of PUBG such a dick? He has banned players from the game for team killing too. Does he have a stick up his ass?
So. They're just opening themselves up for a Lawsuit? Because if they claim Fortnight took their idea, H1Z1 is about to have a field day.
So. They're just opening themselves up for a Lawsuit? Because if they claim Fortnight took their idea, H1Z1 is about to have a field day.
He originally worked for the H1 team, hence why he's steering clear I'd presume
Here we go, already getting too big for his britches.
At least I can make a tiny metal fort in Fortnite to help when the storm gets small af.
Even if PlayerUnknown is one of the first to make these type of BR games with that DayZ mod back in 2013, he was still inspired by Survival GameZ and the japanese Battle Royale movie, so to call someone out for similarities with his game when they're pretty much all the same, just with their own little schtick is ironic. I don't know much, if anything at all, but I doubt you can just call dibs on a whole genre, it's also kinda bullshit to do so, fuck off tbh. Maybe the VP or legal department of Bluehole are unaware of this.
I avoided PUBG because of the whole stream sniping fiasco because of how the devs decided to handle it. Their nonchalant additude to issuing permanent bans for a paid product painted them as pricks and this is just further proof that I made the right choice. You can be as tolitarian and condecending as you want on free to acess stuff but it becomes a whole different ballgame when money is involved and they didn't seem to get that.
Why is the creator of PUBG such a dick? He has banned players from the game for team killing too. Does he have a stick up his ass?
I don't think PU actually has anything to do with this and is more the legal departmental of Bluehole and not the dev team, last I checked. So can the writer of Battle Royale sue Bluehole then?
We have also noticed that Epic Games references PUBG in the promotion of Fortnite to their community and in communications with the press. This was never discussed with us and we don’t feel that it’s right.
I feel like this bit in the article shouldn't be looked over - while PUBG obviously did not invent battle royale this sounds incredibly strange. Did they ever elaborate on how they referenced PUBG? I find it hard to believe epic games would goof up like this
Depends on how similar the two games are. If Fortnight's mode is a literal carbon copy of the mechanics and gameplay then there would be some form of a lawsuit there. But I'm sure Epic is smarter than that and all Fortnight has to do is add and/or alter a few mechanics to avoid that. Train deployment / pre-selected spawns instead of plane drop, not using bombing raids and opting for a gas zone, different method of restricting active areas, etc.
From the looks of things Fortnite's mode is just an all around better looking and playing game than PUBG ever can be.
Not trying to defend their actions on this since it's obviously bullshit on PUBG's part but gonna have to go ahead and strongly disagree. I played Fortnite for a while and good god that game is painfully mediocre. Felt more like a mobile game you'd find on the android market than a full price game. I'm sure the tickrate and all that stuff is higher quality but man there's something terribly boring about Fortnite compared to its competitors. Sure it's a bit more 'finished' or polished looking but that doesn't make it better. Just because your car randomly flips and weird bugs pop up doesn't mean the game is less playable or fun by default (at least it has cars at all???). I have 500 hours in PUBG and I'm still finding fun things to do. I'm pretty sure you can't even prone in Fortnite by the way. How can you possibly have a battle royale gamemode without proning and tallgrass? Doesn't exactly sound like an immersive and well thought out battle royale scenario to me, especially when they don't even attempt first person. I might even say Rust has better battle royale/fort building hybrid stuff going on in modded servers than Fortnite could have ever achieved with their inevitable bandwagon onto battle royale... Lets go down the list of other things this 'completed' battle royale game mode doesn't have: Vehicles, free look, shoulder switching, leaning, ADS, weapon attachments, slow walking (not 100% on that I guess? I'll have to play it again to check). You could say some of these things are stylistic choices but personally a battle royale game to me means stealth and military-esque tacticool sleuthing along a field, hiding in bushes waiting to ambush people. I hate the way PUBG has managed their wealth and development power as well but come on man Fortnite is not that great of a battle royale game.
Correct if I'm wrong, but haven't all those types of bans been temporary and not permanent?
And not even close to the numbers that it's been made out to be.
The more the creator of PUBG continues being a manchild, the more wind the competitors keep getting onto their sails. All it takes is one competent battle royale game to come out and PUBG will come crumbling down because of the pressure and people jumping ship
I just want to remind everyone that this is not Brendan Greene (aka PLAYERUNKNOWN) making these statements, but Bluehole vice president Chang Han Kim. To my knowledge, PU has not made any statements about this so far (Again, correct me if I'm wrong)
You know I think I played a battle royal in Minecraft years before PUBG was a thing
But probably not before PUBR, I'd guess. Reward competence, not incompetence.
I'm just pointing out that you seem surprised for some reason. No shit Epic's version is going to be better this early on. [editline]22nd September 2017[/editline]
But probably not before PUBR, I'd guess.
I can't find out when PUBR was released, but considering that Arma 3 came out the year after the first Hunger Games movie, there's a pretty big amount of time that he likely could've played a MC BR mode server in.
How about, and hear me out on this, instead of being a shithead you get the lawyer cash and pay artists to handcraft LODs and drop the fucking web-ui garbage that your game uses? Maybe even fix a few of the multitude of rendering issues the game has?
i seem to remember there being a movie called Battle Royale
The success is getting to their heads.
I mean he has his username in the fucking title, I doubt he was ever humble. :v:
I'm genuinely curious who could hire the better lawyers.
Last Man Standing is not a new or original concept.
