I worked in an Indian mediation center which dealt with divorce matters and I was always curious as to this practice. Never saw or heard of anyone actually doing it. Some kinda held it up as a bargaining tool, but then the women had their own that could potentially immediately put the husband & his family in jail so it usually ended up as a standoff
