Evidence suggests it will work even on redheads, who normally just burn in the sun. The team at Massachusetts General Hospital hope their discovery could prevent skin cancer and even slow the appearance of ageing. The way the drug works could also allow a ginger tan, as the genetic mutation that causes red hair and fair skin disrupts the normal process where UV light leads to dark melanin. It is not yet clear if the drug might have the unintended consequence of affecting the glorious hair colour, but it is thought the hair follicle is too deep in the skin for the drug to reach. But whether you are ginger, blonde or brunette, the drug is not yet ready for commercial use.
They may not be able to get souls, but soon they’ll be able to get tan…
But like pale gingers are so cute.
<---- Blindingly pale is beautiful. Or at least I assume it would be, if I went outside for someone to see. Also, ginger is a hate word. Wash your mouth out.
:v: I like how there is no middle ground. Just straight up burn
Partner's a redhead, can confirm. She's like a vampire.
They're making daywalkers D: :v:
:v: I like how there is no middle ground. Just straight up burn
It's actually true for most of us. I've spent literally all summer working out in the sun and done nothing but burn even with sunscreen.
But then how will we know they're redheads? :worried: You know, besides being redheads.

I can't think of anything more disgusting than a tan ginger. The hair just wouldnt match the complexion. I'm like a half ginger, so i can tan from extremely pale to pale and from there nothing happens. I used to burn Idk why it stopped, probably spend less time in the sun than I think I do. :v:
I've burnt after even applying spf 50 lotion twice but I still don't want to be a daywalker.
Tan skin is gross I'd rather have cancer.
This is especially neat for me, as someone with Vitiligo, this means there may be a better, albeit likely temporary, alternative "treatment" for it other than just bleaching your skin. I wouldn't get it myself because i'm a proud ass girraffe man but i know several people who could really appreciate this if it works.
that reminds me, is there any drug that treats albinism? or is like the whole melanin pathway messed up.
orange skin to go with orange hair, that would look weird
that reminds me, is there any drug that treats albinism? or is like the whole melanin pathway messed up.
From reading the paper and a brief literature review, it seems that two pathways are at work here. There's the melanin synthesis pathway itself, and there is also a pathway that regulates the synthesis pathway. Redheads have a defective protein in the regulatory pathway that renders it unable to pass the signal on to the next protein in the pathway. This drug "skips" the defective protein and activates the proteins downstream of the defective one, thereby inducing melanin production. Albinos have a defective protein in the synthesis pathway itself, and as far as I know there hasn't been a way to fix albinism by replacing this defective protein.
Does this work for the Irish too?
