Comcast hints at plan for paid fast lanes after net neutrality repeal

Comcast still won't block or throttle—but paid prioritization may be on the way.

Instead, Comcast now vaguely says that it won't "discriminate against lawful content" or impose "anti-competitive paid prioritization." The change in wording suggests that Comcast may offer paid fast lanes to websites or other online services, such as video streaming providers, after Pai's FCC eliminates the net neutrality rules next month.
With no FCC rules against paid fast lanes, it would be up to Comcast to decide whether any specific prioritization deal is "anti-competitive" before implementing it. Pai argues that the Federal Trade Commission and other antitrust authorities would take over regulation in this area, and the FTC could attempt to stop specific deals after they are put into place.

Who needs to improve overall speeds when you can just charge services for "fast" lanes.
So rather than focusing on an improved network for everybody, they're going to improve their backbone and charge you (or the businesses flowing through their network) more to use it.
In other words, no different than throttling in the long run.
Wow it's like someone said vaguely that this would happen, seriously?
Goodbye open internet, it was nice knowing you.
Now that the rules are going to be gimped in our favor in the coming weeks, here's our evil plan laid out for you that you will be powerless to change.
Sorry, but not sorry! - Comcast
This situation really does need more attention then it already has right now, if the gaming community and parents can pit themselves against the gamboling
mechanics of Battlefront 2. Then surely we could pit internet dwellers such as myself with those decrying online censorship against AShit Pie and his "Free" and "Open Internet"
They already dominate the Philly skyline, do they really need to dominate the internet too?

it's all or nothing, apparently
This net neutrality bs wouldn't be a problem if ISPs didn't operate as monopolies in certain (most?) markets. It's not like I can just cut off comcast and go to another provider in protest.
Too bad when NN was put into place, they didn't make it into a law where the FCC couldn't just take it away. I heard they plan to make it permanent or something. Such bullshit.

Waitwaitwait, this new change is going to be permanent? Bloody fucking hell, thanks Trump.
Well they certainly aren't wasting any god damn time. :disappoint:

So much this. I live about 10 minutes down the road from $80 a month, Verizon Fios gigabit service (to compete with the new Comcast gigabit service coming soon). Why aren't they here? Oh, because my county cut a deal with Comcast to be the sole ISP and told Verizon we have no need for fiber.
Another small company was going to set up shop here too for cheap 10mb service to a lower income area and cheap-ish gig fiber ($100/month I think?) to the surrounding area. They were going to take over a old, unused area of a 911 center with hopes to expand into the entire building once the 911 center was fully shifted over to their new building. Guess what, got told no. This county is such a backwards place in many ways and this just seals the deal. I can't wait to move to somewhere in Allegheny County.
Edit: At least I get decent service from Comcast compared to areas of the country. $80 for 200mb service, but I average 230mb. I can't wait to see how Comcast ruins this.

That's what I heard, I don't know how exactly they'd go about doing that but it's fucked up if it's true, all the more reason why it should be struck down.
what is their to look forward to as an american anymore? what is their to be hopeful about? everything that we thought made our country good has been turned on its head. why even have kids anymore when they will have to reap the horrible consequences of our failure. why even live anymore.
Theres only one way to end comcast's monoploly...

That's basically how I feel. It feels extremely irresponsible to have children nowadays because of how shit things have gotten. And honestly at this rate uprising may be the only option left to fix the internet since the official channels have stopped listening.

Unrelated, but god damn those are some straight teeth. He could bite Comcast in half with those.

Proximity to the Canadian border.

because Americans keep fighting. You can't turn and run, you have to fight. Taking away net neutrality is just a small thing compared to some of the things they would gladly take from us. You can't falter as an American.
So do i get an HOV sticker for my computer now or what

Because in the coming decades, we will have the motivation and power to prevent it further.
Man I'm happy to not be American right now.

The ability to fight for what we believe with conviction so that things don't have to be this way forever and people that come after us either know that no matter how bad it seems their voice always matters and it can change, or that we already changed it by then. Preferably both.
I wonder how long this will stand. People aren't just going to forget the internet as it was. This is going to fuck with almost every single person in america and numerous big internet companies. It's hard to know what you have until it's gone and once it's gone and people realize what's just happened the outcry will increase tenfold

It’ll stand forever, or until a politician reverses it by the next decade. The people of the US tend not to give a fuck if they can just buy their way out of problems. Best to enjoy it now and try to find work around a later

Still unsustainable. Damn near any industry you can name is trying to squeeze americans dry these days and we're too poor now to support it. Maybe net neutrality won't be the straw that breaks the camel's back but you can only push so hard. A lot of people might not be able to afford what comes next.
It is easy to get pessimistic about the current situation and at times I even doubt the entire idea of a non corrupt democratic republic.
But thinking about it, pretty much all governments have waves of corruption.
And certain periods in history prove that a Strong Federal Government+ Individual Rights + Economic Regulation creates an effective society.
Thats why I support the democrats over the republicans.
That and the republican party has sold out to evangelicals and oligarchs.

I mean we've been saying that since the 1890s and not much has happened
