Second article / local story from today that i've posted about stopping something terrible before it could happen, interestingly enough.
Two AR-15s and 90 high-capacity magazines were found at the home of a "disgruntled" teenager who was allegedly overheard threatening a school shooting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff said.

The alleged threat was overheard by a school security officer at El Camino High School, located in Whittier, California. Authorities found two AR-15s, two handguns and 90 high-capacity magazines at the teen's home, but the boy's older brother, an Army veteran, claimed the guns belonged to him, according to McDonnell One AR-15 was registered to the older brother and the other was not registered, officials said. The teenager was arrested for making criminal threats while the older brother was arrested on charges including possession of an assault weapon and failure to register a handgun, McDonnell said.
Source I wonder why that second AR-15 wasn't registered, dude was an army vet too. Luckily that security officer caught wind of what the kid was saying.
That's two articles now about possible school shootings being thwarted, not sure how I feel about it
That's two articles now about possible school shootings being thwarted, not sure how I feel about it
It happens all the time after a shooting, people attempt copycat crimes.
That's two articles now about possible school shootings being thwarted, not sure how I feel about it
I have a feeling this isn't a new trend and these things happen all the time without making the news. Sorta like how every little earthquake is reported after a big one. It's in the news now so stories will pop up more often than usual.
an Army veteran, claimed the guns belonged to him, according to McDonnell
This is why you lock up your guns people.
I've seen a number of people make jokes about "shooting up a school" even in person but they weren't being serious and wouldn't actually do it, I'm hoping this isn't the case but I guess it's the cost of preventing shootings from happening in the future (And it's worth it)
This is why you lock up your guns people.
Where did it say they weren't?
Ninety high capacity magazines? :terrists:
Ninety high capacity magazines?
that's not that many. stanags are really stupid cheap if you buy in bulk. "high capacity magazines" is a buzzword btw. those are standard 30 round magazines.
Ninety high capacity magazines? :terrists:
Standard magazines for AR15s hold 20-30 rounds. High capacity by Cali standards, normal anywhere else. I think Cali only allows up to 10rd magazines so anything more than that would technically be "high capacity"
considering they've all got the same finish it's safe to say they were all bought at once. stanag mags have about a thousand different manufacturers that all do their own finish on them. stanags are also disposable, meaning he probably bought a hundred of them for $400 and is throwing them away as they break

It’s a shame news stories where the law works aren’t more popular to write about even though I understand why
see this post there's nothing nutty about owning 90 stanag mags considering how fragile and cheap they are
are they considered legal in california? genuine question, learning as I go.
Think my local gun store sells those things for like a dollar from a huge bin. My brother would carry a bunch to the range so you don't gotta reload the mags all the time. Doesn't seem excessive coming from a Veteran. I hope the weapons were locked up. Kinda sucks that the little brothers comments got the big brothers guns seized. If I had to guess though I'd say since they had two identical ARs, two identical 1911's, and a fair amount of ammo capacity, that the brothers would go to the range together or something. Or father/sons.
are they considered legal in california? genuine question, learning as I go.
Currently legal to own magazines over 10 rounds from what I can find. Probably not for long though as they're trying to ban them but are facing challenge from opposition groups.
I know military servicemembers would sneak out STANAG magazines for personal use (which aren't really inventoried either) which could explain where they got them (considering California, especially LA County is really strict on guns, magazines, and ammo) You can only go to gun ranges in California with 10 round detachable magazines otherwise you get kicked out. I seen cops give someone a stern talking to when they found out he had a 30 round magazine at a range before.
are they considered legal in california? genuine question, learning as I go.
it's kinda a clusterfuck. you're allowed to own them, but not to buy or sell them or bring them into the state, meaning any 30 round stanag in the state of california has allegedly been there since before 2000. that's not too bad in legal terms, but where it starts getting fucky is that 30 round 5.56 magazines are also 10 round .458 socom magazines, meaning if you sell them as .458 magazines you can sell them in california in sort of a grey market. that's one of the ways people get around the high cap ban in canada too

So good luck telling when they were made or when they were brought into the state.
The other fucky part is that there may be no date of manufacture on stanags. He's lucky they just took his fucking guns from him, ["joking" about committing a school shooting should carry a lot more punishment than just seizure.] (Brackets are hindsight, but I'm leaving it up for reference)
He's lucky they just took his fucking guns from him, ["joking" about committing a school shooting should carry a lot more punishment than just seizure.] (Brackets are hindsight, but I'm leaving it up for reference)
Both the younger and older brother were arrested though. The older brother got arrested for possession of an assault weapon in cali and failure to register a handgun. The younger brother was arrested for making threats. Both of them are facing years, if not decades in prison, plus state felony charges that render them ineligible to own firearms in the country ever again.

None of it is easy nor cheap. They're both going to be in it for the long haul - weapon seizure is just the begining.
See that's why I put the brackets on it, I'm not going to just delete because I feel it's important to keep. They should be charged, and it's good that they were charged, but they should always be charged for this sort of thing.
While I'm glad the appropriate legal action was taken against these individuals, I always hate how sensationalist these stories often become. I'm pro-gun, and I wouldn't call myself liberal or conservative, but also believe it is way too fucking easy to get a gun in the US. The "test" they make you take is laughably easy and only the most basic of operations are ever gone over. That needs to change, now. But this isn't really news and is only popping up because one, there was the recent shooting, and two, because of the AR-15s which if they were any other two guns we probably wouldn't be hearing about it.

If they can prove he acquired them after 2000, he's looking at effectively life in prison iirc.
Why it's always AR-15s???
Why it's always AR-15s???
Because it’s an extremely common gun
