i downloaded several maps for gmod off the website and i dont know how to use them or anything, please help me if you know how

Have you tried rebooting your PC 5 times?
Extract the files to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\<username>\garrysmod\garrysmod\maps

i got the maps in but cant get the characters
Are these characters models or NPCs?
