• Why is earth and other planets rotate around sun?

I googled this Q but i couldnt find a propper answer, so I thought I'll get some help from you.All i can see in books is: Earth goes around sun in 23h 56min 4sec,speed of 465m/sec and many other statistics but they dont say what experiments, tests etc conducted in result of those afirmations. How does that the planets are not atracted in a straight line in the sun? Instead they circle? what "pushes" them to circle? The boom that happened when they formed? You throw a rock but eventually it will stop... Gravity will attract an object straight forward, not make it circle. So, where is the truth? EDIT:" Why is earth and other planets rotating around the sun"
Gravity (the sun with its immense mass) forms a bulge in the fabric of space. The planets "sit" on this and travel in circles.
earth other planets rotate cus they have gravuty
Gravity forms a bulge in the fabric of space. the planets "sit" on this and travel in circles.
:golfclap:
Space has no friction, so that unless an orbiting object flies out of orbit or plows into the thing it's orbiting, it's not gonna stop.
Every object with a mass have a gravitation field, some stronger than others. The sun's gravitation field is much greater than the earth's, as the mass is much greater than the earths. About the stopping thing, the space is a vaccum, so theres no friction.
The earth is already travelling at 90 degrees to the sun, the gravity of the sun creates a force at 90 degrees to that of its velocity, and therefore changes its direction of movement. What is happening is the earth is spiralling towards the center of the sun and eventually it will reach the center of the sun. tl;dr The earth is still accelerating towards the sun but because it already has a velocity at 90 degrees it doesnt go directly to the center. Also the only force acting on the earth is the one that pulls it toward the sun.
It's also because you touch yourself at night.

Oh you silly gooses we all know the sun rotates around the earth! So do the other planets! (Old science!) (No, but really we rotate around the sun do to mass and velocity and Gravity)
According to the Bible, the reason Earth rotates the sun is because God loves everyone (except Black People, Gays, Bisexuals, Mexicans, Jews, Arabs, Muslims, Women, ect.) and he made it that way. No other proof needed, people.
The earth is trying to move past the Sun, but the Sun is constantly pulling it in. The orbit occurs because the two forces are in such a balance that the Earth does not get noticeably get closer to or farther away from the sun. This is where I got the answer: http://www.qrg.northwestern.edu/projects/vss/docs/space-environment/1-what-causes-an-orbit.html
i already /threaded, get out.
except your answer was bullshit.
Space has no friction, so that unless an orbiting object flies out of orbit or plows into the thing it's orbiting, it's not gonna stop.
Yes but there is gravity from sun in space, right? That's why Neptune and Pluto dont go out of the Solar Sistem. That would make planets collide if sun wouldnt be around here. But why sun makes them circle instead of atracting them?
Every object with a mass have a gravitation field, some stronger than others. The sun's gravitation field is much greater than the earth's, as the mass is much greater than the earths.
Ok so the force of the planets when they were movin' around freely combined with sun's gravitation would make them circle? That would make sense, but still at sun's imense atracting force it can't pull Mercury in itself?
The earth is trying to move past the Sun, but the Sun is constantly pulling it in. Ok so you throw a "metal" in the action range of a "magnet", it would either move on its own straight way if that force that proppeled the planet was huge,or stop it from its way,and then attract it in a straight line if it wouldnt be that powerfull.
What is happening is the earth is spiralling towards the center of the sun and eventually it will reach the center of the sun.
wait what?

You throw a rock and it stops because we have atmosphere on Earth, as well as gravity. Which are two main factors that stop the rock. Even if you factor out gravity, the wind resistance caused by the atmosphere will eventually stop the rock. Likewise, in space there is no atmosphere, so you can throw something in space and it would take a forever to stop unless it hit something.
wait what?
This is what I mean, obviously it will take millions of years and millions of orbits for the earth to reach the sun but you get the idea. Also mspaint FTW
But there is gravity, right? So that still doesnt prove anything.
Youve gotta be horseshitting me.
maybe this is more useful. [editline]10:06AM[/editline]
Are you retarded or something?
Seriously?
They orbit because the earth is trying to go one way while the sun is trying to pull it another way, so it ends up going in an orbit. Inertia, people.
One experiment, the Foucault pendulum, demonstrates the rotation of the Earth.
If sun's gravity is so powerful that it keeps Neptune orbiting, why wouldnt it attract straightwards the planets closer to it? also, this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Lwf3G5eiwo after going straight for 2 seconds, the water goes up, wonder why...
All the rotation and orbit of planets and everything else in the Solar System comes from when the formation of our system was triggered by a supernova.
alright listen the planets are attracted in a straight line but because they already have a velocity they dont travel in a straight line towards the sun, I am not very good at explaining things but come on guys this is simple stuff. and yes the earth is accelerating towards the sun and this means it will spiral towards it

In what is estimated to be 5 billion years, the Sun will turn into a red giant and Earth will be toasted.
