• Getting a GED and leaving high school early...

I hate high school. Every day that I have to show up, I feel a little more depressed. Whenever I speak of my feelings, the usual response is "just deal with it." Am I wrong for disliking high school? I feel like the information being taught is not practical or applicable for what I want to do in life. I feel as if I'm being judged on my ability to repeat the same mundane tasks instead of my intelligence. I want out. I talked to my parents about it, and after a large amount of bitching pointlessly at them, and getting bitched pointlessly at, I got a compromise. My parents will let me take the GED and leave high school if I get a job and a car. Is this opportunity worth it? What do you think I should do, Facepunch? I am 16 years old and in 11th grade.
Stay in school. I'm 17, have a job, and still trying to get a car. (Junior in HS). You only have one year left and, senior year is supposed to be the best. Also, HS Diploma's look better on applications then GED's for career jobs.

I can't give myself a reason. The fact that I have one year left, and the fact that it's senior year isn't enough for me.
getting a GED, although it's obviously much faster, is actually more difficult than getting a highschool diploma in your situation I would personally stick with highschool and find a hobby or another way to deal with the stress/depression

Study, breath, and live music if thats what you want to do. Only dedication can get you big. You will thank us later for telling you this. Dont be like all the people before you and quit school, move to cali, smoke a lot of dope, shoot up, and then claim to make music.
my cousin got his ged when he was 16 and hasnt done jack shit for the past 2 years. he's 18 now and should have gone to college this fall, don't know if he did though.
Why should I stay in school, though? It really doesn't seem like those who have GEDs have it much worse than those with regular diplomas. You may think its a good idea now, but you will probably regret it later in life.
If you ever decide to try college (Which is a 1000 times better than high school) it will be harder if you only have a GED That said I have a friend who has had success with only a GED even though most do not; he does say he wished he had got his diploma though because it was hard for him to find a good job
You may think its a good idea now, but you will probably regret it later in life.
Why?
There are a lot of people who disliked high school, the key is to look toward the future, if you feel that class is boring and does not challenge you intellectually take high level classes, try some new electives next year, you might even try talking to your counselor about internships (if your school offers them) which allow you to leave school early and get hands on job experience
It's not that they don't challenge me intellectually. If I took higher level classes, I think the only difference would be work that took longer to complete. I feel like the work I am doing is pointless.
Why?
There is a heavy negative stereotype against people with GEDs, if you do decide to get a GED there is a good chance you will have to watch people who are not as intelligent as you take your future jobs and promotions because their diploma is considered "more qualified" Try other classes, apathy is common in most teens, I know I was plagued by it. But apathy later leads to regret; just try to hang in there and in the end it will pay off. Check to see if your area has any early college options which in the same amount of time give you a diploma and an associates degree while not having a boring class environment.
Man up and push through kiddo, at least there isn't a military draft
everyone hates high school man, it really sucks, just know that when you get into college you really start to figure out what you enjoy other than stupid gen ed shit, and its a lot harder to get into college with a GED which is essentially a 8th grade education
High school may suck but it isn't really that bad. The only people I know who are actually doing well who dropped out of school early are people who got apprenticeships etc, most other people are finding real hard.
I don't plan on going to college.
I don't plan on going to college.
Why not? If you're black you can go for next-to nothing. (or if your white, you can get a shit load of scholarships/loans)
Well in the end it is up to you, but at least talk to your guidance/class counselor and see if they have any advice on making high school more enjoyable to you.
I don't plan on going to college.
If you're smart you'll do well regardless of your 'education' But since you're at the tail end of high school just push through you only have like 1 year left

The people I've talked to seem to think that the only reason you should go to college if you are pursuing a career in science or mathematics. I am not.

I am in the bottom quarter of my class but I'm much smarter then most people. Getting into a college is my issue.

Would you want to spend a year in prison? Probably not. That's how I feel about high school.

I dont like taking math/science but, I take it anyway due to being required to.
Look at it this way then, you spent more then 11 years in prison and your parole trial is due next year
Why wait when I can leave sooner?

And if you go to a liberal arts school it can really help a musical career. This is all the majors offered at my college, college is not just sciences anymore
Why wait when I can leave sooner?
Thats like having an ankle bracelet for the rest of your life. Dude, stay in school. People dont joke when they say that. My mom has a 4-year degree and makes 70k a year while my dad who just has a GED makes under 20k.
Why wait when I can leave sooner?
Your past 11 years of education will have been for nothing, essentially. I was in your boat when I was 17 and trying to leave home. I changed my mind. Don't give up, especially being a junior! Trust me, on your graduation day, you will be very happy you didn't cop out and get a GED.
