It's harder to think of an alternative to cheese in a pizza, where as something like the tomato sauce is interchangable, for example with BBQ sauce on a meat feat pizza. If there was an alternative to the cheese, then maybe it could still be a pizza.

Every italian restaurant serves at least two or three pizza without any cheese. Some combinations don't work to well.
For instance I like the anchovie pizza, it's mostly consisted by loads of tomatoe sauce and anchovies, maybe some olives and loads of spices. It's a rad pizza.

A proper Italian pizza generally doesn't have any cheese. American pizza on the other hand pretty much always does. They're also thicker and more richly topped with a wider variety of things.
