It's just a slang. Being a bear is more or less about being hairy on the chest and sometimes more. A lot of gay men shave or wax their bodies to show off build more, where as bear culture is about appreciating the more rugged, unrefined male body--the American working class masculinity. Think of a lumberjack, the animal is big, powerful, and fat, and so are the men, simple. Bears are normally very harsh towards effeminate males and a lot of them are closeted bastards. There's also the term Otter which refers to a furry-chested male who's thin, not bulky.
Don't ask me to explain Twink, I still don't get that one.
It's because Mother Bears love and protect their children and just know when something is the right thing to do!
