They make that pretty clear in the actual article and explain situations when an x99 platform would be better and why.

they said it wont perform better game wise, just if you have a ton of programs up that requires 6 cores. With my 700K, i still keep my framerate while streaming/recording easily on very demanding games. I just dont see the point unless youre doing desktop work to have the 800K or have 3-4 GPUs (like said in the article, they also said in general the 700K is your best bet).

It really is nowadays. Back when the G3258 (overclockable one) came out, the benchmarks were rather split, but newer games are pushing towards the i3. Also while the Pentium still has some performance in it, it REALLY suffers when it comes to real life systems, when you don't just have a fresh Windows install with a couple games on it. Doing really anything in the background kills them.
