So I am writing a short story about the president of the us and his staff during the apocalypse, here is the beginning of it.
People are machines.
No matter how much we think, reason, debate and ponder. In the end we are just another earthly creature. A creature with biological instincts. Our bodies rule many aspects of our lives, and no matter how much you can try to stop yourself, in the end we always give in to our biological needs over our mental desires.
When we have to use the restroom, we cannot deny ourselves, when we are in pain we cannot make it stop, and when we are tired it is hard to force ourselves to stay awake.
Wallace was out to give his body a run for its Money. He was determined to not give in, he couldn't sleep, not while the world outside was still spinning. He needed every possible advantage he could get his hands on at all times if this plan was going to work, and that included himself and his brain working 24/7.
"Sir, the airlift had arrived, it will take you to our safehouse in Maine"
Wallace lazily glanced over towards the notice that interrupted his work.
"Ok, thank you Marshall"
"Not a problem sir"
Marshall starts to leave the room
"Oh and Marshall?"
"Yes Mr.President"
"Go home, be with your family. You have done quite enough, focus on yourself now."
"Ok...
Marshall starts to smile
"Thu...Thank you very much sir"
"You don't need to thank me"
Marshall leaves excitedly
Wallace packs up his papers into a file as 2 men escort him to the door.
Inside the helicopter, his eyes begin to feel heavy.
After 3 days, the battle was over, and Wallace's body had won out.
This sleepy victory was short lived however, as within an hour Wallace was wide awake again, wondering how on earth he could fix this.
He glanced at his watch
To be continued...
So my question is, what exactly is the crisis that is going on?
I can't decide so I figured I would ask here.
I want it to be serious, and I a bit it to fit the story but also not be too generic or cliche.
I was thinking Yellowstone volcano, but I wanted to see what ideas other people had.
So post any ideas you have below!
Thanks in advance.
magnetic reversal of the north and south poles

Ooh I didn't think of that! Thanks
Non-stop rain, where eventually it gets so flooded that everybody ends up living on boats
Kinda like Waterworld, but more depressing

This is the best so far, thanks!
okay so it rains a bit so that theres water on top of everything, but then it stops raining and shit so theres lightning and everyone just gets shocked to death.
Since it sounds like George Wallace is President I'd suggest a global race-war.
The planet will be broken in large chunks that all manage to somehow contain the atmosphere of the planet within each other, while still close enough that from a distance the planet will still be recognizable as earth, but with obvious massive chasms, with the core being exposed. during the entire apocalyptic earthquakes and environmental changes begin to take shape until everything is settled down into the dissaray that would be post apocalyptic torn from the inside earth, where everyone will have to rebuild the fallen society from scratch while avoiding deadly gravitational anomalies.

Dont know, I never played it. Or seen anything related to it.

You could also have acid rain, and then in the end, a hole would open in the sky and suck up all the water so everybody would die of a drought
Okay, maybe that's taking it a bit too far
How about a complete disappearance of every single man on the planet expect those in the safehouse? And of course it goes without saying the only guy in the safehouse will be the president himself.

I'm not going to lie, I would totally read a story that was about a race war in the US being sparked over George Wallace being president. It's not a total apocalypse, but things could get really bad for basically everyone living in the US.

Can I steal this?
How about a new ice age?
The Memes have come to take over.

Ironically, the apocalypse is that the world is spinning too fast. Night and day are too quick, messing with sleep cycles and the weather.
Or the world has stopped spinning altogether. The day/night cycle lasts roughly a year. The magnetic field has weakened, and the weather is even more bizarre than with the 'too quick' scenario.
Or maybe the apocalypse is that the world is simply spinning the wrong way, like Uranus. In spring and fall, half the world is in darkness while the other half is in permanent light. In summer and winter, the world is spinning such that Antarctica routinely crosses the equator, heads to the North Pole, crosses the equator on the far side of the planet, then comes down around the South Pole and starts over again. Who the fuck knows is going on with the weather.

Yeah I would totally read that.

The Russians decide to build a very large fan to blow all of the snow away and end up creating a super outbreak of tornadoes across the world that never die.
Rednecks take over America and then begin to slowly conquer the world, and all that inbreeding slowly degrades our species.
The only people who aren't inbred live underground in hiding.

Presidents cat accidentally launches a nuke on the Pacific ocean causing huge tsunamis and fishes starting to walk on land with guns and killing people. Then the cat becomes the leader of the world, forcing everyone to sleep in his litter box while he shits on them.
