• Windows 8: What's so bad about it? Serious Question.

Windows 8 has been pretty hotly debated as being almost worse than Hitler ever since Microsoft revealed Metro to everybody. I got Windows 8 on my new PC earlier this year and haven't had a single problem with it that i'd directly contribute to having Windows 8 as my OS instead of Windows 7. I'm not qualified to say it's a good operating system or not, and i'm sure it's not really worth the money to go from 7 to 8, but if there's someone that knows what they're talking about reading this could I get a run-down of what's so bad about Windows 8 as an operating system besides Metro looking tacky and it saying "Tap here" instead of "Click here" when you stick a thumb drive in? I'm genuinely curious and not making this thread to be a dick.
there is nothing wrong with windows 8 there's nothing spectacular about it either
The problem is, as you mentioned, Microsoft basically trying to say 'spend money on this feature you don't want/can't use' combined with the fact that in reality, the two are pretty much the same OSes as far as I can remember. I had zero incentive to install it, and never did, but played with my Stepfather's some and just felt 'meh' at best about the changes.
Pros: - Faster than Window 7 - Start screen which can look nice if modded - 8.1 has a start button - Advanced Task Manager Cons: - No Start Menu - Has 'tap' instead of 'click' in some places - Some programs don't have full support for it - Metro (depends on personal preference) Honestly, it's just preference on which one you want to use. I love Win8, but I can see why some people don't like it.
I love it personally.
This one of the reasons I love 8: [t]http://puu.sh/68IDb.jpg[/t] [editline]4th January 2014[/editline] fuck, my merge
The issue for me comes in on how you use Windows 8. I use tons of 3d applications and game software developer programs, only to find that nearly half of them doesn't support windows 8. Why use a machine that the program I need to work with doesn't work?
I once temporarily used a windows 8 labtop when my windows 7 computer was getting its keyboard replaced, what i hated about windows 8 was it kept minimizing my steam games. Upon research, other people were having that same issue. The screen savers were cool, though.
Metro. Sorry, I hate it, but it's fixable. Start8 makes it just like Win7
It's an OS made for Touchscreen with no changes made for better use on desktop.
There's nothing wrong with it, it's a faster version of 7 but since the start menu takes up the whole screen nerds get mad because they hate change.
I was a h8ter for a long time and only used 7, then i actually used 8 and 8.1 and loved it. Id have a hard time going back to 7 now. The boot up time is great!
Most of the people I know who constantly belittle Windows 8 are those who have never tried it for themselves, it's one of those systems that grows on you over time and if you stick with it for a while you'll wonder why you didn't upgrade in the first place. That being said, the people who won't upgrade to 8/8.1 from 7 are the same kind of people who don't want to upgrade from XP to 7. Change is a very important factor in this, but eventually you're going to need to upgrade no matter what, so what's the point postponing it? As with metro, yes it is a massive change from the start menu that has been going for many years, and yes it is built for touchscreen technology. But it's also keeping up with modern trends and it's not really any more difficult to use than the start menu before. Personally, I find it easier to search for stuff with the start screen. Rather than it being a small box in a corner of the screen it covers the entire screen and I can find what I'm looking for easily. Not to mention that you can get start8 for it and get your own start menu anyway. There really is no reason NOT to upgrade.
I don't like the layout, but i prefer it over mac's
There's nothing wrong with it, it's a faster version of 7 but since the start menu takes up the whole screen nerds get mad because they hate change.
even with taking up the whole screen it's way easier to use and way way faster imho
Because it's basically change for the sake of change, and if you upgrade from Windows 7 you'll just spend time learning to use the new UI to do the same things you could do in W7.
I upgraded from Windows 7 to 8.1, so far; the layout for the start menu is confusing. But it increased the performance for my PC.
I use win8 because it boots billion times faster than 7 did to me before and I really like that the window color is based on the wallpaper I have. It's overall faster too and I don't mind metro because I've never really used the start menu unless I wanted to open my autostart folder or to shut down. Metro is actually fun once you made everything sorted and good looking. [editline]4th January 2014[/editline] As long as all programs work in 8 I won't go back.
With 8.1, it gives you the option to boot straight into desktop. So its like its never there. Also for you us multi-monitor peps, using Apps on a different screen while playing a game or something is great!
The boot up time is great!
I never understood this. Why is boot up time such a huge selling point for W8 advocates? "Oh man, my PC boots up in 3 seconds rather than 7, what an immense, life changing difference."
Nothing really. Minus the fact that some good games are incompatible with it and won't work no matter how hard you try... Cough, IL-2 Sturmovik, cough.

It's not "bad" it's just based on preference. When I bought my laptop which had Windows 8 on it, I had definite plans to just downgrade to 7. But once I got used to how windows 8 works I had no problem with it. the shortcuts are pretty useful, and I do enjoy the look of the lock screen myself. The tiles are a bit unnecessary and I don't use them all too much but they don't bother me. Would definitely be better if there was a distinct difference between windows 8 on a tablet and windows 8 on a desktop (speaking aesthetically)

"Oh man, my PC boots up in 3 seconds rather than 7, what an immense, life changing difference."
It's actually nice when you're in a hurry to write something down or whatever - it's not a huge selling point (and it's probably not worth it to upgrade from 7 to 8 at this point), but it's nice I guess? And it's more than that. My laptop booted up in ~50s on Windows 7, takes ~15s on Windows 8. And it's noticeably snappier on older hardware, in my experience.
* Window controls are on the right side and not the left. No first party way to change that (that I know of). * You still have to defragment the hard drive periodically. * Theming? No first party way to change how it looks besides wallpaper and what color you want the window border (that I know of). * Start screen/menu. I know this can be modded back to the olden days, but both ways are slow to use. * Generally have to search for software and hope whatever you find isn't that malicious. Windows Store does exist, but feels like it encourages tacking a price on things. * Can't Alt+drag windows to move them. Have to use the title bar. * Can't Alt+Mouse2 to resize windows. Have to carefully align your cursor on a window border and pull. Or the menu right-clicked on the title bar. * Comes with hard to remove bloatware if you buy your PC pre-built, but that's blamed on manufacturers. Can't easily bulk-install. One at a time. Ironically, most of these problems can also apply for Win7 but (as far as I know) aren't fixed for Windows 8. My list can goes on.
I've had no issues with it, it's all around faster. I just installed Classic Shell and called it a day. There's nothing wrong with Windows 8, people just bitch about the metro screen, the desktop is still one click/tap away.
In 8.1 theres an option to boot straight to desktop.
I like Win8, It starts up crazy fast on my pc considering there's no ssd. People complain about the removal of the start menu but all Win 8 did is make me realise how little I used it.
There's nothing wrong with it. It's just that people hate change so they complain about anything new.
