I'm sure I heard this was gonna be free once on steam, was I wrong?
And instantly bought. There's been too much love and effort put into this mod to not throw some money their way.
It's basically a full blown game anyway, so I have no problem buying it.
It's an update to the mod. Consider this Steam version (which the writer neglected to mention in the article's title) to be more of donating to the mod team for their hard work - which is well deserved considering that it took eight (and more) years for them to somewhat finish this.
Also multiplayer which was always a planned feature and not in the mod.

No. It was always meant to be put on Steam with a price tag. You can still download the free version, if you don't want to pay.
Is xen part of the game now?

Not yet
People are being entitled cunts on the Steam discussion page.
It's not difficult to see that they will release Black Mesa on Steam and charge by way of a donation page essentially, or you can download a free version of the 2012 version that will soon be overhauled.
lol on the steam website the page inst available

A donation? You are paying them to get the complete version of the game, it's not any more of a donation than any other game on steam. Unless you're saying that they are also updating the free version with Xen? I can't find anything saying that.
But with that said, I don't have any issues with this personally, the original free mod already had very high production values and could have easily passed as a paid game already, these guys deserve money for this.
If this a joke, not funny. If it's not a joke, Black Mesa is ruined. It was fun because it was free, I will never pay £14.99 for a HL remake. No matter what new stuff you put in there
Was kinda hoping Xen would be part of it.
HLDM is amazing, but i don't want to play on the maps which they stripped out the campaign.
I'll buy it eventually. Are there any changes besides the addition of multiplayer?

Pretty much a entire overhaul of the mod. Tweaks, new higher res models and animations, you'll basically be paying for a polished game upon release not a mod.

It's all well and good and you are entitled to your opinion but a lot of other people don't feel the same way.
The way I see it these guys have been laboring at this for years on their own free time and no expectations of getting paid for it. But now they are getting the opportunity to get funds from it and perhaps even start working on the game full time so they can make multiplayer and finish Xen.
You don't have to buy it, the game is mostly out as a mod already. You can wait until they finish it and then buy it, or wait for a sale and buy it for a price you think is acceptable for the time they invested in it.

who would pay 20$ for an early access mod that has been in the works for almost 10 years?

Will Xen be free? It had better be.

It should be.

Bear in mind they still haven't completed Xen though, so it is indeed only somewhat finished.

Somebody who wants to compensate them for their many years of hard work without pay and help fund the development of the rest of the game?

no, that was a relatively recent decision. no one thought of charging for mods until Garry's MOD was available for purchase through steam, which opened the floodgates for "we can charge money for total conversions?"

How could you say that? Gmod was released on steam in 2006 Thats 9 years ago, and 6 years before the first black mesa source release.
Its pretty crazy to make claims about selling a HD remake until valve actually gives you the green light.
This is how you do paid mods.
Regardless of what state is in now, I'm gonna wait till Xen is in before I buy this. That was the one thing I was hoping for once they got it on steam.
And instantly bought. There's been too much love and effort put into this mod to not throw some money their way.
I agree, it would be selfish to be all like "Wtf it should be free always".
This is the way paid modding should be handled in my opinion.
No automated system, just once a team put enough love and effort into their mod, shaping the community's opinion of the mod accordingly, they reach an agreement with the developers (valve) and re-release the mod in a paid edition.
Much like what happened to gmod.
Of course, this depends on competent developers / publishers that aren't blatantly against modding for no good reason
who cares? its cheap as chips. mow some lawns
