I use my Windows phone 7 with Nokia Drive, and though it doesn't have all the addresses (some smaller places don't have house numbers) and the pathfinding isn't 100% perfect, it is a great program (and of course maps).
The fact you can download the map data for whichever country you want absolutely free is a big plus for me since I'm not a big fan of staying connected to the internet with my phone (especially if you go roaming, then forget about internet altogether).
Though to be honest I didn't know that Microsoft didn't buy the mapping part of Nokia, that's completely new to me
I was never a big fan of how poor Nokia Maps has been.

You can download regions of maps with Google Maps

Odd, I find nokia maps to be much better than gmaps. Not to mention the region download for gmaps is just convoluted to an extent.
Nokia Maps (or rather "Nokia HERE") is great, what are we on about here?
Why? Google Maps is available and it's heavily integrated into Android. This is beyond unnecessary.

They seem to have been trying to separate themselves from Google for some time now

Separating themselves from Google is an absolutely terrible idea. Samsung needs to stop being so damn greedy, they're already making about $300 profit on every phone they sell. They don't need that 30% that Google makes from their app store as well.
Even though Google is kinda a monopoly w/ Android and all, Samsung's version of it is absolutely fucking abhorent and they should feel bad for distancing themselves from android
