One of the worlds largest games publishers – Electronic Arts – are to deliver a short presentation at next weeks Ubuntu Developer Summit.
EA has published some of the worlds most successful gaming franchises, including The Sims, Harry Potter and Battlefield.
The EA plenary session is only scheduled to last 15 minutes, but following the news that digital games distribution system Steam is coming to Linux chances are that it will yield some exciting information for Ubuntu users and gamers on Linux alike.
The talk ties in with a rumoured ‘deal’ between Canonical and a major games publisher.
Could we shortly be seeing The Sims available for purchase in the Ubuntu Software Center?
I hope they bring some big name titles rather than only stuff like Bejeweled or other PopCap games.
Popcap games are cool, but I'd like to see Need for Speed, Crysis, or Mass Effect or something like that.
The last company I would like to see there.
I mean, out of the big cats.
Is EA getting desperate now? :v:
Looks like EA is trying to tackle more minds, this time of people, that are passive to absolute faggotry that Ubuntu is actually suffering from. All thanks to Mark Shuttleworth.

As much as I dislike EA, I'm seriously getting the feeling that you're just one step away from saying "W1nbl0w$ lolololol"
This is great news. If EA brings Origin and games to Linux, I'm going to be SOOOOOO happy. Especially with Steam and Left4Dead 2 already being ported too.
Oh right I forgot that they had Origin.
I don't want to get excited quite yet because it's way too early, but this is the beginning of a big "Fuck you" to all the idiots who claimed investing in Linux was a dumb idea and that the platform would never take off for the consumer market. It's time to grow up and realize that other people like Linux and Mac OS better than Windows for very valid reasons. The game industry has to follow eventually.
Linux doesn't deserve to be tainted with the shit stain that is Origin.

Then you should not install it, when it is out. It's that simple, really.

I've never really seen the issue with Origin. It seems faster than Steam to me, it works relatively well (Much smoother than Steam was when it was first released), fast download times, lots of good features that Steam doesn't have (But also missing loads of features that Steam has).

Valve lets the Phoronix guy take crappy picture of L4D2 running on Ubuntu, and a small video, and then EA dumps a couple million bucks into Linux to beat Valve to market.
If EA actually fixes the issue of shitty drivers, I will be so conflicted internally.

And rightfully so.
EA's been consistently a dick on the market for several years, while Activision only recently decided to milk the CoD franchise.
I'm still not gonna throw any money in EA's general direction, Linux support or not.
Let's all see this from another angle: Maybe other companies will see what Valve and EA are doing and will soon follow the trend.

There's the optimism.
I for one can't wait to see what EA's plans are for linux. If both Valve and EA are working on improving the platform, one can only hope that things will start rolling in a great direction for linux gaming. Plus I would love to be able to play BF3 on my Arch box.
By seeing Linux as a perfect gaming platform, everyone is now gonna develop stuff with OpenGL, the standard graphics libraries, thus encouraging everyone to switch to it, develop it and give it features it never ever had. I can imagine OpenGL rendering DirectX completely useless in the future because of it's open-source code and compatibility with everything.

DirectX will still attract developers due to funding from MS. There's nothing wrong with using DX really, but a larger amount of games and studios moving to Linux would certainly help OGL a lot, and it would probably be quite nice for more games to use it.
As far as I know, it's a shitload easier to start working with DirectX than it is with OpenGL, but no personal experience.

Apparently it's about the same. DX makes some things easier, OGL makes others easier. I know the guys behind Luagaru made a blog post about OpenGL mentioning it really has no downsides for the developer if you can make the conversion to it, but I dunno, other than MS funding there must be a real reason DX is used today over anything. The MS smear campaigns a few years back are known as wrong by almost anyone who does the slightest research.
Not only will OpenGL/CL take off, but graphics drivers will likely see VAST improvements in the up-coming months, thanks to game development on Linux. :D
It is the start of a brand new ERA of the Linux gaming!
It is starting! YYEEESSSS!
