Yes I agree, I never really enjoyed it all that much, seemed very linear for what it seemed to be promising.

You're playing it wrong.
Also, I have to highly recommend stalker to anyone who wants a difficult but incredibly immersing first person experience. The atmosphere is absolutely crushing, and the gunplay is brutal. On higher difficulties, you can't squander a thing, and everything you pick up is to be used carefully. Also, there are many brilliant mods for all three of the games, that add tons of new features and content to the already magnificent vanilla game. Drop by the STALKER thread if you are at all interested, because I promise you, these games are worth your time.

One of the biggest problems I have with Call of Pripyat is that I can't change the graphical settings at all, save for the resolution. I turn everything all the way up and it doesn't do a thing.

I think multiplayer is dead. Singleplayer is a bit fun. Oh and make sure you something other than a keyboard to play.

Here is what i can recommend:
AI War (This game is so fucking epic if you like strategy games, it's also cheap like fuck, watch some gameplays on youtube)
Beat Hazard (I had no idea what this was, i started the game and suddenly my eyes was raped. I played one round in singleplayer and my mouth was full open all the time, i think i got elipsy just from playing it.
Deus Ex - You know why.
guys, if you don't have STALKER or Deus Ex, [b]get it[/b]
lots of people hate STALKER because they couldnt get into it (i was the same way), but trust me, if you sit down and seriously throw yourself into the atmosphere of the game, and stop being cynical for an hour or so, you'll absolutely love the game.
and as far as deus ex goes, the game starts sort of slow, but its a classic PC game and its well deserving of that title, everyone should play it.
Be warned though, that AI war isn't your casual 1 hour a match RTS. Or the hardcore 6 hours per match 4x RTS either. AI war matches can range between 8 to 12 hours routinely. Not something you'd play in your extended coffee break :v:

Remember you can pause it :). Also the AI has been nominated to be the best AI ever made.
