Just a random thought: What if your maximum selling price was controlled by entry fee?

That would be kinda awful, I think. I think the developers should be free to set any price they choose; if it's too high for customers to want to buy it, that's on the devs.

Ok I have a better idea
Valve will have you come over to their HQ
and for every round of Russian roulette you play and win you can release a single title for free. You can also earn an entire 5% of profits!
then it wouldn't be possible to make niche games.
Are niche games generally $40+

It doesn't matter if they are or not (also yes they can be and beyond, especially if you count sims)
I dunno if Valve can afford to go higher than $100. Yes, it sucks that Greenlight has had its fair share of stinkers getting through curation, though having the entry fee cost more will likely deter indie developers that deserve to have their voice heard.
Steam Direct is better than Greenlight, and fee won't break it, because there is Kickstarter where you can get money. Plus, if game won't suck too much you can get money back from Valve.

I think the recouping of costs means that your 30% steam cut is 0% until you earn back what you spent 🤔
Honestly it doesn't even matter if Steam has a flood of shit games put on it. If they improve their algorithms for searching for games and curating games on the front page, it would almost be a non-issue. Something like $250 would be good.
I just hope that it isn't exactly the same as greenlight just more price, with the voting removed

I mean honestly 50% of the problem with greenlight was voters are easily manipulated and would approve shitty anime VNS games (not that there's anything inherently wrong with that), but would not approve actual quality work because it didn't market itself as well or have as high universal appeal.
Having Valve judge it for themselves is probably preferable.
