Well I've heard of Heroes of Newerth, it's a DotA game, much like League of Legends. Never of this mod though.
HoN seems to get the least publicity (but still more than Blizzard DoTA)

To be honest, Heroes of Newerth is going to slowly die out. When DotA2 gets released publicly it's going to be the last nail in the coffin.

Maybe. Some people have said they like HoN better than DotA2. It won't die out completely.
But it will have a very small community. Some S2 staff have moved to Riot Games already and now people are comparing LoL to DotA2 rather than LoL vs HoN.

Yeah, but Lol and DotA 2 are both sequels to DotA. Each has their own expanse and advancement on the original.

I wouldn't call dota 2 a sequel to dota. More an enhancement. Lol also doesn't really fill the same notes as it's a simplified reimagining with less emphasis on player ability.

It's 2 employees out of 60, not really that big of a move, Nome was pretty shit at making heroes anyway.
I like HoN, but you have to buy heroes for real money. That or you can grind/play matches to unlock them.
DotA2, I like it. There is a lot of it to be fixed, heroes are OP, things are bugged. There is a slight delay, and it's slow paced.
Nah HoN would be great without those messed up S2 Heroes that take 2 months before they are balanced to same level as old heroes. :/

It certainly makes more sense than Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, that's a pretty vague description you could apply to any number of multiplayer games.
Both HoN and LoL borrowed the core concept and a lot of other things from DotA, calling it the
DotA genre or simply ARTS makes much more sense, and it sounds better too.
I dig Heroes of newerth more than league of legends, but now that i have access to the DoTA 2 beta... Screw those games!
